Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 20, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, we are going to first catch up with some Vonage news. Then, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a set-up issue where the correct static IP address is needed, and here goes another Vonage Forum thread but this one happens to be about a Vonage user who has moved from the U.S. to Canada, and what changes he needs to make on his Vonage account. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Names President of Product Development

Vonage has announced the appointment of Russell Dauer as their new senior vice president of Product Development. Dauer is expected to help expand the company’s initiatives beyond its award-winning technology and feature-rich, cost-effective services.

Dauer will be entering the company with a strong foundation of experience, said Jeffrey Citron, chairman, chief strategist, and Interim CEO of Vonage. “Russ brings an impressive breadth of product development and engineering experience in the communications sector to the table,” he said. “We believe that he can hit the ground running when it comes to capitalizing on the positive reaction we've seen thus far to the expanding stable of Vonage-branded devices.”

In his last role, Dauer worked as the vice president, engineering of the emerging technologies division at Avaya (News - Alert)—a major global provider of communication systems, applications, and services—where he spearheaded the newly formed Emerging Technologies R&D Division to develop and produce strategic technologies and products.

Prior to this, Dauer also played variety of leadership roles in communications, including vice president, engineering at Flarion Technologies, senior director, business development for the Intel Capital division of Intel Corp., and business unit general manager for Dialogic (News - Alert) Corp.

As a graduate of Carnegie Mellon with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, Dauer brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience in the communications industry to Vonage’s product development operations.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member shawndang has begin a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Motorola 2142 with static ip pc.

To start this thread, shawndang has written:

"My setup for Vonage is Cable modem------router------Motorola 2142 My router has DHCP off. I am using static ip for my lan. My Vonage device does not work with this setup. If I turn ON DHCP in my router then the Vonage works fine.

"How can I use static IP with the 2142. My PC ip is Motorola 2142 ip is"

To that question, fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56 has answered by writing this follow-up post:

"Set your Vonage to," ed56 has written. "You will also have to set the DNS and gateway to the address of the router (I assume"

Now we go to a Vonage Forum thread that happens to be named, change address to Canada

In his thread-opening post, Vonage Forum Member nmstough has written:

"I have had Vonage service for 4 years with US address; now that I have moved to Canada and no longer have a US address I want to change my address and the website ( will not let me. I called Vonage and they said I had to take a different (Canadian area code) number and pay $15 more per month to do this. What kind of nonsense is that? Has anyone been able to change their address to Canadian one?"

In his reply, fellow Vonage Forum Member bmccull writes and asks:

"In what way would it help you to change to address to a Canadian one? Since they don't send anything by mail, I would keep the US address and the lower price. Isn't the 911 address set separately from billing?"

And then nmstough responds:

"There are a couple of problems with keeping a US address while in Canada: first the billing address has to be tied to your credit card address and I cannot have my credit card with a nonexistent US address, second, for replacement of equipment, they will not ship to a Canadian address unless you have a Canadian account.

"Finally, no you cannot choose a 911 location in Canada if you have a US account."

That post was followed by one from another Vonage Forum Member, dabones

And so dabones writes:

"You're going to have to change to a CDN acct.. you might be able to keep your number as a Virtual Number if you're lucky, there have been reports in the past where people have been able to do that..

do you not have any family or a good friend that you could use their US address for a credit card and Vonage acct? and maybe other US-related services you may want/need to keep??

I have a US credit card with a US address and I dont' live in the US at all.. I use my mother-in-law's address for my US Visa card, and i just view my transaction history online, and send checks to the bank office in Charlotte when I do actually use the card and need to pay it..

There are lots of times when having a US credit card can be very handy, so why loose it in the first place?"

Finally, Vonage Forum Member toolio wrote:

"Keeping a credit card with an address in the foreign country in which you have recently lived can lead to undesirable tax consequences. It is one of the deciding factors when competing governments decide who you should pay tax to--in this case, Canada or the U.S. Too many ties to the old country and you could end up being taxed by the U.S., even though you live elsewhere. While this sounds absurd, it is quite common. If you keep a U.S. credit card it is important to have it registered in the address of the country in which you live, if your credit card issuer will allow it."

Vonage Stock Report

On today, Vonage stock closed at $2.04 a share, which is a one cent  (+0.49%) rise from Tuesday's $2.03 a share close.  But then again, today's closing Vonage price was three cents more than today's lowest price which was $2.01 a share .At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded happened to have gotten to the level of 267,641 shares.
