Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 19, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about computer requirements to run Vonage, and then we are going to look at this thread which happens to be about access point issues. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Computer requirement for Vonage Voip is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been established by Vonage Forum Member sumang24.

"Is a computer needed to configure Vonage adapter the first time?," asks and writes sumang24. "I have a DSL connection with modem but no computer.:

Responding to this question is fellow Vonage Forum Member tglea.

"If you buy it from a store, you need to activate it online," tglea wrote. "So yes you would need a computer for that. If you order direct from Vonage, it will come ready to go. However, if you have any problems not having a computer will make it difficult to troubleshoot. May I ask what is the point of DSL without a computer?"

"This is for my parents in India and they don't know how to operate a computer," sumang24 posts back." If I get the adapter in USA can it work in India . In India the power is 220V where as in USA it is 120 V."

So then tglea responded as he wrote:

"Yes. Buy the adapter here however you like and test it out here to make sure everything works. Then take the adapter with you or send it to India. You can also search the forum for use in India. One thing to be aware of, you may need a computer to get it running the first time in India. I think most of the providers there use PPoE and you need to put those settings into the Vonage router. You can't access the configuration page of the router without a computer."

Motorola WR850G running dd-wrt: Lose wifi if I pick up phone is an interesting new Vonage Forum thread started up by Vonage Forum Member w0lf.

So w0lf writes:

"I've been a long time Vonage customer and have been pretty happy with their service. This is what my setup currently looks like:

Cable --> Linksys RT31P2 Vonage --> Motorola WR850G WiFi

I've been using the WR850G as a simple AP with no routing or DHCP. The linksys provides DHCP to my laptop, etc. I recently flashed the WR850G with dd-wrt v23 and v24 RC. While my wifi works good, I have a major problem. As soon as I turn on a phone, I lose wifi connectivity. So, whether I receive a call or turn on the phone to make one, no more wifi. When I hang up, wifi comes back within seconds.

I've posted on the dd-wrt forums but haven't had much luck so far. I tried flashing the Motorola firmware back but it's a .trx file and I get an incorrect file format. I'm trying to figure out why turning on the phone would do this. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!"

Our most frequent poster by far, and that is Steve48 of course, answers this way:

What kind of phone is it? 2.4 GHz cordless phones can cause problems with wireless LANs.

That post by Steve48 engenders this reply post from w0lf:

"Yes, it is a 2.4GHz. I'm aware of the potential problems but what I can't figure out is how this suddenly appeared after I flashed to dd-wrt and persisted even after I went back to OEM firmware on my WR850G. I've had this setup for over 3 years and had the same phones and never had a problem. Once dd-wrt entered the picture, this started and now I can't get rid of it. I don't have a corded or DECT phone to rule the 2.4GHz factor out but even if it is the problem, how did dd-wrt introduce it? I've spent almost all day trying to fix this: moving the wifi in front of the Vonage box to finally reflashing with OEM firmware. No good."

Then Steve48 writes,

"I can't say why it would crop up now. Maybe re-flashing caused something to change channels. What I do know is that this is a very old story on the forum. A wireless system runs fine for a long time with a cordless phone in the mix, and suddenly a problem crops up. Go figure.

"Anyway, if you can borrow a corded phone long enough to check things out, you can confirm or eliminate this as the problem."

Finally, then we have wOlf in a new post in which he writes:

"Got a cheap 6.0 DECT cordless and the disconnects are gone. Spent the entire day trying to fix this. Would still like to know what flashing dd-wrt did to cause this to happen. It has to be it because that's the only thing that changed. Thanks."
