Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 15, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about switching phone services to Vonage and another thread lends itself to discussion here and that is about some connection issues.. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member Rickp started up an interesting Vonage Forum thread with the title of, Now Verizon wants me to stay.

Rickp begins his thread by writing this post:

"On 2/11 I put in a order to move my Verizon line to Vonage and yesterday I got a letter from Verizon saying that if I stay I can have a $50 credit and the freedom package for $19/month for a year. I called them about a month ago and they best they would do was add detailed billing so I could see exactly how much long distance I was using to see if I should change plans.

"Now that the port goes through they have a deal for me. I have already switched to the $14.99 unlimited plan in my first month, so Vonage is still cheaper than Verizon's "deal". Anyway Vonage's site says the port should be complete on the 19th, is that the day my Verizon line should go dead and my Verizon number will ring on Vonage?

Answering is Vonage Forum Member PSJ. As to the part of Rickp's post in which he wrote:

"Anyway Vonage's site says the port should be complete on the 19th, is that the day my Verizon line should go dead and my Verizon number will ring on Vonage?"

PSJ responds with one word: "Yes."

Now, we shall come to learn about a Vonage Forum thread that is being called, Intermittent failure of other non modem connected house phones. This thread has been started by new Vonage Forum Member sib.

Here's what sib wrote to begin this thread:

"On three separate incidents over the last 8 weeks; an incoming call would ring normal on the Vonage modem connected device but short rings on the other house phones. I pick up the receiver and the phone is dead. Try others, include modem connected phone and "no dial tone". Disconnect modem connected phone from the wall and the modem connected phone works.

Have tried the following:
- Powered off the comcast cable modem (Motorola surfboard SB5101) and the Vonage modem to no avail.

- Changed out phone wires, splitters and no luck there.

-Vonage tech came out and initially felt it was a short in the house wiring. However, a couple of days later with nothing done to the house wiring; I happened to hit the standby switch on the cable modem first OFF then ON and plugged the Vonage back into the wall jack and all the phones worked for a week or so. Then came another of those short ring phone calls and the system went back to no phones working unless I unplugged the modem phone from the wall jack.

Also, noticed that sometimes the "phone light" is lit on the vonage modem; then if I power fail, there are no phone lights lit at all yet the modem connected phone is working.

I am going to go to Best Buy and get another Vonage modem to see if the problem goes away. ANY IDEAS? This issue is driving me bonkers and the Vonage tech continue to scratch their heads in bewilderment."

And now it is that Vonage Forum Member ed56, who has been quite active on the Forum with some great advice, chooses to respond to sib's post by writing:

"This can happen on the VT2142, has on mine. Regarding your problem, I would disconnect one of the house wired phones and see if there are any changes," ed56 suggests. "If not, try disconnecting another and see if there are any changes. If not the wiring, may be one of the phones.
