Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 8, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today,  we will touch on some Vonage news. Then we go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage Talk over a satellite Internet connection, and then I've read a thread that we will talk about concerned with trying to figure out what's causing Vonage calls to appear to slow down a user's PC. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

Website Reviews Vonage V-Portal

The Website HardwareGeeks has lots of interesting things to say about the Vonage V-Portal. Here's a link to the review.

Here is the review itself:

Vonage released the first of a line of Vonage Branded products aimed at making new users', and users who aren't technical inclined, lives a lot easier.

Vonage announced during CES Vonage V-Portal a device that can connect up to two Vonage lines and allows you to use it as a router and caller ID box. The V-Portal device is designed to make the installation process of a new Vonage line a lot easier than before.

To test how simple it was, I asked my mom install it, and she agreed. She came over, read the included instructions, plugged the modem into the V-Portal box, plugged in the phone line and cat5 cable for the computer, and what do ya know, we had phone service, and the computer still had an internet connection.

My mom, a 60 year old woman, hooked up my phone service in 5 minutes. If she can do it, anyone can do it.

But the simple install isn't the only feature the V-Port has.

The device has an LCD screen that will alert you of any problems with your line; it also acts as a caller ID and Voicemail indicator. You can easily check the status of your lines and even run a bandwidth test.

One of the coolest features on the device is the easy dialing feature, which gives you quick access to your voicemail, news, weather, greetings, and more.

You can also enable and disable a lot of features such as Anonymous Caller Block and Do not Disturb without having to log into your Vonage account.

The V-Portal is also so small that you can simply unplug it and take it with you when you travel.

Overall the V-Portal is great, and I recommend it to everyone who wants Vonage but is afraid of the set up process, because the V-Portal has made the entire process quick and easy.

For that, we award the Vonage V-Portal our 5 Star Must Have award."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I see that ed56, who is a veteran Vonage Forum Member, has chosen to start a Vonage Forum thread with the name, Vonage Talk via Satellite

"My wife will be going out of the country next week and will have internet access via satellite. I checked the codecs on Vonage Talk and they seem to be pretty forgiving with regard to bandwidth," ed56 writes. "I also found it works pretty well over a Verizon air card, which really surprised me. Has anybody had experience with Vonage Talk over Satellite? If so how did it perform?"

And then so it is that fellow Vonage Forum Member roscopco replied by writing this:

"I would say it works the same as Vonage over satellite, the pits. I haven't used it over satellite, but I have used it over a wireless internet that was really slow and the results were horrible," he writes.

I guess all you can do is try it out," adds roscopco." According to Vonage reps, this probably won't work so well.

Now we move on to another Vonage Forum thread. This one happens to have the name, Vonage Calls Slowing Down My PC. The thread is begun by Vonage Forum Member johnnym, who writes:

"I got a new WRT54GS router that I planned to use in front of the vt1005 adapter b/c of the QOS features. Well, that was a disaster, as the Vonage kept kicking my internet off no matter what I tried re: port forwarding, DMZ, QOS, etc.

"So I finally broke down and did what Vonage wants and put my vt1005 in front of the router. Looks like things are ok. Speeds are down a bit, I haven't figured out my port forwarding for utorrent yet.....but the BIG problem is that whenever I'm on a call my computer slows to a crawl.

"The biggest problem I see is with my mouse. Very choppy control, very slow response. I was on a call and managed to run a speed test on my browser and the speeds were fine...so why is the Vonage call slowing down my actual PC and not the internet?"

Two of the most intriguing replies come from Vonage Forum Members ed56 and mundy5.

Here's what ed45 writes:

"Had a thought . . . . If you use a wireless mouse, some wireless mice (radio vs. IR) operate on 2.4ghz," ed56 writes. "Did a web search and found this comment on a forum: "I've had about 5 different Logitech's that have been 2.4ghz, and all of them were affected by wifi. i changed the channel on my router, and it helped, but sometimes i still get stuttering or lag, or the buttons wont click." Go figure!

"What may appear to be a computer slowdown may be the mouse radio signal being interrupted," adds ed56 adds. "That could be if your phone is 2.4 ghz, hence causing the interference, not the wifi . . or the combination."

And as for mundy5, he then added this:

"Good catch ed56. I agree. there is no reason for your mouse operation to be slowing down b/c of vonage," wrote mundy5. "They are separate issues and if you are indeed using a wireless anything, then there is your problem. make sure they are not all on the same frequency."
