Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 6, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, let's look at some Vonage News. Then we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about wireless router install questions, and the other thread is about teleconferencing over a Vonage connection.. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Announces Personnel Moves

Vonage has announced that Mike Sears has been appointed Senior Vice President of Global Service Delivery Operations, the customer-facing organization that is responsible for all customer contacts. Also, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Sharon O'Leary will be departing the company at the end of the first quarter.

Sears holds a master's degree in business administration from Wake Forest University, where he also received his bachelor's degree. Previously, Sears had been serving as the Vice President of Customer Service for DHL Express. He managed the strategic and tactical delivery of customer service, overseeing more than 1,700 employees. Sears was instrumental in a first call resolution program that improved customer satisfaction scores by 15 percent and reduced customer complaints by more than 10 percent.

In a press release, Vonage Chairman, Chief Strategist and Interim CEO Jeffrey Citron said “Mike has an impressive skill set that will enhance Vonage's ability to keep improving our customer service. We believe that Sears' 18-plus years of leadership experience in customer service and operations will build upon the foundation Vonage currently has in place.”

Before working for DHL, Sears served in various positions, including Vice President of Customer Service Strategic Planning for Wachovia National Bank.

Joining Vonage in August, 2005, O'Leary helped the company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in May, 2006. Sharon developed a first-class legal and regulatory team and she was the company’s first general counsel. As Vonage faced various legal battles and patent infringement accusations, Sharon has helped guide legal strategy to fight these charges.

In January, Vonage and Nortel Networks Corp. settled their patent litigation, allowing for cross-licensing of each other's technology. Last year, Vonage, of Holmdel, N.J., agreed to settle four other patent suits and, in each case, promised to pay the other side for prior use of its products. Vonage recently agreed to pay AT&T Inc. $39 million as part of a settlement. Vonage also has said it will pay Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. a total of $200 million to settle lawsuits.

Citron said that he appreciates the time and energy O'Leary put into managing the company's legal and regulatory affairs during her tenure.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member TobyTyler begins a Vonage Forum thread with the title of, wireless router - Install question(s).

To open his thread, TobyTyler writes:

"I am expecting my Vonage package tomorrow. I have Verizon DSL into a Westell 6100 DSL modem. I have my Netgear WGT624 wireless router plugged into the Westell. I operate 2 notebooks and one wireless AIO printer via the Netgear wireless. It is my intent to plug the Vonage into the Westell (after unplugging the Netgear from the port), then plug the Netgear into the Vonage for wireless computer/printer access. Is this the best use of resources to insure the highest level of Vonage service?"

First up with input is fellow Vonage Forum Member clark9825:

"What device is acting as your DHCP server? If your Westell modem is than your fine if your router is then you will need to address that by making the Westell the DHCP server for your local network," clark9825 he writes..

"I have a very similar setup. I too have Verizon with the Westell 6100 modem and a Linksys router," he adds." What I have done to ensure good quality is I have made my westell modem a gateway and let my Linksys handle the PPOE authentication and also handle my DHCP server. So my config is my router is plugged directly into my Westell modem then the Vonage adaptor is plugged into my linksys router.

"Also inside my router linksys gives me the option for QoS I set the mac address for the Vonage adaptor as highest priority inside the linksys this was it will always give the Vonage adapter first crack at available bandwidth Even with the QoS off I have had good luck with this config," clark9825 points out further.

Then our most frequent poster, Steve48 of course, adds this:

"If your internet use is undemanding in terms of data rates and so forth, that setup will work well. The Vonage device will give top priority to voice traffic, assuring the best phone calls. However, the Vonage router/adapters are not robust routers. If your internet use is more demanding, the best solution is to put a good router with QoS capabilities first and plug the Vonage box into it. Set QoS to favor the Vonage box. I don't know how good your Netgear router is."

TobyTyler then answered like this:

"Clark9825 and Steve48 - Thank you both for your response.

My Netgear is about 3 years old, so I am sure it does not have provisions for QoS. I had to look up DHCP and PPPoE, so I am obviously not the Internet geek I would like to be. I have no clue how I can alter the settings to make the Westell the DHCP server and set the Netgear to handle the PPPoE. Chances are that a review of the user's guide would enable me to do that, but I am not sure I want to invest the time into making my "antique" gear work.

After reviewing both responses, it is pretty clear that the wise move for me is to obtain a new wireless router with QoS features.

My actual telephone (soon to be Vonage) use is actually quite insignificant (< 1 hour per week). I don't know if my existing Netgear would be adequate for my style of phone/computer usage or not. Computer (Internet) use is heavy for perhaps +/- 30 minutes per day.

I think I will do the smart thing and get an updated Wireless router with the QoS feature.

Again - Thank you both for your very helpful response."

Steve48 then replied,

"You're welcome. But before you spend money, plug the new Vonage unit into the Netgear. See how things go," Steve48 writes. "There's no harm in trying. If you do determine that you need a new router, be prepared to spend a bit of time learning the DHCP and PPPoE issues. One way or another, you're probably going to need to know how to configure things. If you know how to get to the configuration pages on the Netgear, start by looking at how it's set up now."

And finally, TobyTyler answered this way:

"Steve, I will follow your advice. The price is certainly right. I have actually peeped at the Netgear's setup (via IE). Interestingly, PPPoE isn't referenced on any of the setup screens. The DHCP is described, and seems to simply be a radio button to select or deselect (as the permitted IPs are already listed). I will try the Vonage with my existing gear - and I'll post my results (probably Thursday since the latest UPS track says that is my delivery date)."

Vonage Forum Member savra has a question which he has decided to turn into a Vonage Forum post title of, Simultaneous calls at least 10.

"I have a question regarding simultaneous calls. I would like to call at least 10 people simultaneously but I can not find any way to do that, any program!," he writes. "So I really need help on that matter. Could you please have any suggestions?

So it is at this point that roscopco, who is closing in fast on 1,000 Vonage Forum posts, offers this:

"There is an alpha project out there called Contact Book, check out: and then go to the Contact Book, you sign up and you should receive an email. You can only call up to 5 people with group calling."

Savra then answers back:

"I would like to thank you for your reply. Please if somebody knows any other way for group calling I would appreciate it as I have to find the best solution after testing them of course."
