Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - February 4, 2008

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 4, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, first  we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a problem with the adapter, and then here's another thread, but this one is about the voice quality one user is experiencing on some Vonage calls. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member mandg brings up a new Vonage Forum thread which has the title of, VT1000 adapter loses wan ip address several times a day.

"I've been a using the Motorola VT1000 adapter for 3.5 years now and have been having this issue for the past 18 months," mandg writes. "I have already replaced my broadband modem (Motorola brand) but still continue to randomly lose my wan ip address on the VT1000 adapter.

"For reference," mandg adds, " I'm currently on Roadrunner cable broadband (was migrated from Comcast) and my connection is as follows: Cable Modem=>Vonage VT1000 adapter=>SonicWall router=>16-port switch=> desktop / 802.11 Wifi access point=> laptop. Typically, I power off the cable modem, Vonage adapter, and Sonicwall for about 10 minutes and power them back on at the same time to restore connectivity.

"Has anyone ever seen this issue?"

It does indeed seem that fellow Vonage Forum Member toolio is familiar with what mandg is discussing here.

Toolio then writes:

"You should have your modem connected directly to the router, then connect the Vonage ATA to one of the ports in your router or the switch. In this case, make sure the Vonage box is not set up to function as a router. You can also try giving it a fixed IP in this setup. I have done it this way for years, first with the VTA1000 and later with a Vonage Dlink ATA, with no problems.

"In other words, don't let your Vonage VT1000 sit between the cable modem and the router," toolio adds. It will only cause problems. From your description it is currently set up that way, which means you probably have two devices functioning as routers--which can lead to double NAT and a host of other ills."

Next we will discuss the Vonage Forum thread that Vonage Forum Member Dominus has started up. This thread has as its title, Recent Serious Stuttering During Voice Conversations.

For his thread-opening post, Dominus mixes information about his Voip test scores with a description of the issue he is dealing with.

He writes:

1. San Francisco
2. Speakeasy DSL: Home Select OneLink ADSL 6.0/768
3. 6.0/768
4. Broadxent 8012 1V
5. RT31P2
6. Modem ->WRT54GLWireless ->RT31P2
(pc's and mac's also connect to wrt54gl, one by ethernet, all others wirelessly)

7. For a year or more the quality of my Vonage line sounded great. Recently my voice conversations have degraded to the point I'm no longer using my vonage line and I'm taking all my calls on my cellphone now. The effect is a stuttering. A person saying "hello" to me sounds like: "he-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-lo-lo-oh-oh-oh".

8. Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 1735496 bps
Upload speed: 560080 bps
Quality of service: 55 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 138 ms
Average download pause: 7 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 106 ms
Average round trip time to server: 107 ms

VoIP test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 2.5 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.1 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.1 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 9
Estimated MOS score: 3.9"

Steve48 follows this post up with his own post in which he has written this:

"Your test results aren't wonderful, but they aren't bad either. First, are you using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone? If you are, try a corded phone. 2.4 GHz cordless phones and wireless routers are a bad mix. Even if you've been using them without problems for awhile.

"Second, have you set QoS in the WRT54GL to favor the RT31P2?," he asks of Dominus. "If not, you should do that."

And then this post comes next from Vonage Forum Member lardelfar:

"I had this problem before as well. I think the phone I was using was 'going" as they say," lardelfar tells us. "I upgraded to a better business phone (I use Vonage for my home office) and that seems to have solved the problem, although there will be the occasional stutter."

Vonage Stock Report

On today, Vonage stock closed at $2.05 a share, an increase of seven cents  (+0.50%)  from Friday's  $2.00 a share close, but then again, today's closing Vonage price was higher than today's lowest price which was $2.00 a share .At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded had amassed a total of 587,683 shares.
