Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 30, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, first  we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router setup issue, and another thread that has to do with a router that might be going bad and for which a replacement is needed.  Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member mcnich50 had a question about the Motorola VT2142 router, he decided to open a Vonage Forum thread with that exact name.

First, mcnich50 begins this thread of his by writing:

"I have a Motorola vt2142. How can I change a port setting. I have a game that requires port 7010 thru 7100 to be UDP enabled. Apparently these are automatically TCP set-up. I am not very savvy when it comes to configuring the modem/router. I have the manual but it is still a bit out of my league and I don't want to mess up any setting by accident."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member tmbeem then replied as he wrote:

"Without going into horrible detail here, I will tell you that there is a website that lists how to forward ports for most routers. The Motorola VT2142 is NOT on there but the Motorola VT2442 is and they're very similar in the way you forward their ports. The website for the VT2442 is:

"There you can find instructions on how to forward your required ports for any number of applications and games. Just pick your application from the list, and it'll give you step-by-step directions on how to forward the ports you need.

"If there is any additional assistance you need, please ask. I can go into detail here if needed, but you can print out the pages on the website I gave much easier than trying to follow directions here. Good Luck!"

Next, Vonage Forum Member nickleback offered this:

"Access the an IE and type," he writes. "Enter router for user name and password. Go to advance and from there open the port that you need to open. You can also try putting it to DMZ."

Vonage Forum Member copepod is, well, trying to "cope" with an issue that led him to start a new Vonage Forum thread he's calling, incoming calls ring - but drop immediately for caller and me.

To explain his problem, copepod first wrote about his issue and then included his Voip test results:

"Multiple people in different states have been calling me (New Jersey-Bergen County) for the last 4 days and I do hear the phone ring but the call drops for them before I pick it up (no registration on our caller-id and no incoming registration on my Vonage account). So absolutely no incoming service for me (outgoing is fine).

My Vonage router is the original Cisco ATA 186 behind a Verizon FIOS --speed test 9314kbsdown/3992kbsup MI424WR router-- no configuration changes on my side - working ok for a year like this.

Would have expected if it is a problem with Vonage service --- as reported back ~ Dec 17 2007 with many people claiming the same symptoms, that I would not be the only one reporting this problem now.

any suggestions?

Then it came to be that tglea, a very active Vonage Forum Member, followed up with a post in which he offered this input:

With your rock solid internet service and the fact that nobody else is reporting the same issues, I would suspect your adapter is flaking out on you," tglea writes. "It is rather old and they don't last forever. I would call tech support and see if they can help.

"You could possibly get a new device free of charge from Vonage by calling as well," tglea adds. "It may take some work and threatening to cancel but I'm guessing you are a longstanding customer so that should help. Alternatively, you could go to a local store and pick up a D-link VTA or Linksys PAP2 and add it to your account and then switch your number to it. If it doesn't work but I suspect it will), you can return the device. Those are my thoughts. Good Luck!"

So then Vonage Forum Member wsmontgomery added to the thread by posting this:

"I also had this issue several weeks ago. I knew that the PAP2 was going bad, but could not prove it. Finally, after over an hour on the phone with technical support, the PAP2 died. Then came the half hour to prove to the engineer that the unit died and it was not my electrical outlet. What a nightmare. After all this, I was directed to go to the store and purchase a new Vonage Router. Mine was over a year old. I communicated my dissatisfaction and was given a $40 credit no my next months bill.

All and all, I spent over two hours on the phone, trips to three different stores to find a router, and $10 (not covered by the credit). My recommendation - just buy a new one."

Nickleback answered all these posts with this follow-up:

"If you want, you can cancel the account and get a free new router. When the new acct has been created, ask to change the number they gave you to your old number. You will only need to pay for the shipping as the sales people can waive activation fee," he wrote. "Be sure to select a new router and not the refurbished one. Oh BTW, the new router will only cost you $10 + shipping. Your choice. Make sure also that you're acct is more than 1 year so that no disconnect fees will be charged to you."
