Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 28, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, first we will catch up on some Vonage news. Then we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router issue, and the other about a wiring issue.  Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage's CEO Is Featured In USA Today

USA Today, which is the most widely circulated newspaper in America, ran a feature interview with Vonage CEO Jeff Citron today.

Citron was upbeat during the interview. He talked about the potential of VoIP, his view of Vonage as the only Voip company that matters, his search for a CEO and how that decision will impact Citron's role in the company, as well as plans for exciting new services.

You can get to the interview by clicking here.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

First let us begin with a new thread Vonage Forum Member Buffalo55 has opened. Buffalo55 has assigned this Vonage Forum thread the title of, Installed WRTP54G - Nothing but problems since.

"The title says it all," Buffalo55 writes. "We bought the Linksys WRTP54G to go wireless in the house since we got a PS3 and Laptop for Christmas. Since then, nothing has worked (well) and vonage is now forwarding all of the calls to my cell #. On an incoming call, the phone rings one long ring and if you answer it, you get dead air. In the mean time, it's being forwarded to my cell. I've cancelled call forwarding, but then it just sends everyone to voicemail. For a couple days this happened sporadically, but now every call is forwarded.

:The phone and router are both 2.4Ghz, yet the phone is more than 4' away, as prescribed," Buffalo55 adds. "Can they both play nice? Or do i need a new phone? The wireless signal on the router is fine...until now. Now there is nothing. If i reset the modem, the signal comes back, but the phone still doesn't work. Quick suggestions? Thanks!"

It is at this point in the thread that tglea, who is one of our most helpful and knowledgeable Vonage Forum Members, gets on the thread with some suggestions for Buffalo55.

And this thread gets an extra perspective from the experiences of fellow Vonage Forum Member mrwood.

"I feel your pain. I had the exact problems you are having," mrwood writes.

" I tried to configure the linksys router AND my PAP2 on the web based configuration utility page, and nothing worked," adds mrwood. I finally switched my phone to a 5.8GHz, and all is well now.

Now we are going to come to learn about a new Vonage Forum thread that has been given the title of, Wiring Question

Vonage Forum Member Rickp begins it by writing:

"I had started to ask this in an existing topic, but wanted to start a new one to see if anyone else had any experience with this. I have cat 5 cable running from one point to all the jacks in the house. Currently the only thing on them is the pots line. I just signed up for Vonage and am not quite ready to get rid of the regular line yet. Can I run the Vonage line over the same cable as the pots line but on a different pair, then install a double jack (2 separate jacks, not a splitter) on the other end, one for Vonage one for pots? That way I have flexibility to have the pots line, vonage, or both anywhere in the house."

First among Vonage Forum Members to respond is tech_mcky.

"As long as the wiring you're gonna use for the Vonage (service)  is isolated within your house only that should work," he writes.

Then tglea writes:

"I've never tried it but yeah it would work. No different then having two lines on your POTS. Blue/blue white for line 1 and Orange/orange white for line 2. Be sure you really know what you are doing though. You don't want to mess it up and end up feeding the voltage of your POTS to the Vonage adapter because you will probably fry it. Also, unless you have two line phones you won't be able to use both at each jack. You will have to wire some for Vonage and others for POTS. Since you started a new thread, I thought I would post my old comment here as well. Hopefully you get a couple more opinions so you feel comfortable making it a go."

Rickp replies:

"Thanks, I did come across this which suggests it would work. I did think about using a two line phone, but after reading this I might hold off on that."

Rickp then posts a link to some relevant material on the Vonage Forum that can be found at,

Finally, our most frequent poster Steve48, gets in to the thread as he writes:

"It definitely works. Many people have done it; I did for awhile. One suggestion: If you connect the Vonage box to the wiring by plugging it into one of the phone jacks, use a cheap patch cord to do it- one with only two wires (one pair) in it, instead of a good cord with all four. At least one Vonage adapter- the D-link VTA- has shown some odd behavior when a fully populated cord is used to plug it in. And, as Tglea said, be sure you understand what you're about before you do it."

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday, Vonage stock closed at $2.00 a share, an increase of one cent (0.50%)  from Friday's  $1.99 a share close, but then again, Monday's closing price was a full six cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.94 a share. At the close of Monday's trading, Vonage shares traded had been tabulated to have reached 813,003 shares.
