Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 23, 2008

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 23,2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we'll catch up on some Vonage news. Next, we'll go on to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a firewall-related call-out issue, and the other happens to concern issues with using Vonage in conjunction with Tivo and an alarm system. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage V-Portal Now Available In Canada

Vonage Canada, has officially announced the V-Portal, a digital voice adapter and single port router with a built-in liquid crystal display (LCD),
giving customers more control over how they communicate.

"At Vonage, we are dedicated to delivering new solutions like the V-Portal that empower the consumer," said Joe Parent, Vice President, Marketing and Business Development. "If we continue to take the additional features Voip provides and make them consumer friendly, we will compel consumers to migrate to VoIP for the many features in addition to the cost."

Using customer research and feedback, Vonage says it has created a device that assists with installation, helps with basic troubleshooting, and has easy-to-use features. The V-Portal has a cool and sleek, yet simple design, and an integrated LCD screen that provides real-time feedback and error messaging, allowing users to easily troubleshoot basic issues. The screen can also be used for Caller ID, timing calls, call logging, easy access to Vonage service numbers, and for displaying the date and time.

"With the V-Portal, we are starting a trend of making innovative Vonage-branded products relevant and responsive to the way our customers
communicate," said Bruce Robertson, Director Product Marketing - Vonage Digital Voice. "The V-Portal expands upon what customers typically expect
from a router, and is the closest thing to having a customer care agent with them in their home."

The V-Portal is now is available to new Vonage Canada customers on through for $9.99 after a $70 instant rebate ($79.99-$70.00 = $9.99).

Unable to Call out of State is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been started up by Vonage Forum Member Newcastle.

Newcastle writes this post to get his thread going:

I live in California, and I've noticed today that I cannot call out of state. I've tried placing calls to Illinois and Tennessee, and all I get is silence. I don't get any sound on the phone that indicates the call is going through. When I make local calls it rings immediately. Anyone else having this issue?

Then, Newcastle follows up with another post in which he adds these details:

"Update. The people out of state can call me just fine," Newcastle writes. " However when I tried calling them back, they said they their phone rings, but when they answer they get nothing. I just get silence on my end when calling them. I get no indication that I've even made a phone call. When I place local calls, they ring through just fine."

Steve48 follows up to suggest to Newcastle that,

"I'm afraid only tech support will be able to address this. However, I'm curious as to what would happen if you ran a test call to Boston on www.testyourvoip.com."

So then Newcastle follows up with a post in which he supplies this info:

"My results from the test call to Boston below. Not sure what that means. I ran the test call to San Jose, and it worked giving me a score of 4.4. London gave me 4.2, Sidney gave me 4.3, etc. At that first screen where it lists the MOS score for various locations it lists [n/a] for Boston, but gives numbers for everywhere else. So it would appear that I can call anywhere in the world except the other 49 states in the U.S. That makes no sense.

Then he included his later test results:

Test Failed

Your computer couldn't call our location on the standard SIP port (5060) or a commonly available port (6000). This suggests that a firewall is blocking all UDP access including SIP. Please check the following:

* Your Personal Firewall, if you are using Windows XP, may be filtering the SIP and UDP ports used for communication.
* Your home firewall or your broadband provider's firewall may be blocking the SIP and UDP ports used for communication.

Please check these firewall settings and ensure that UDP ports 5060 and 50000 - 50100 are open for RTP streams and SIP signaling. Then re-run your test.

Please try again in a couple of minutes. If the test continues to fail please contact us at TestYourVoIP@Brixnet.com"

But now I see that fellow Vonage Forum Member Matrix0785 offers this suggestion:

What's the brand and model of your router?

You might want to look at this post:

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic21681.html

I had the same exact situation with a D-Link DIR-655 router. Hopefully this works!

And hey guess what. But then to think of it, let's Newcastle himself tell us how things have turned out with this tech issue.

Yep, I've got a DIR-655, and I made the change to the firewall settings according to that thread, and it fixed the problem," Newcastle writes. "Thanks!"

So next, Vonage Forum Member Falcon20 has fired up this thread that he is calling, Two problems: TIVO & Alarm system.

Starting up this thread with a post in which he asks some questions, Falcon20 wrote:

"I'm considering Vonage but from reading the forums there seems to be two issues (for me that is) that could cause me problems. One is I have DTV and an old alarm system that has worked beautifully for the last 15 years. It looks like if I switch to Vonage that I will have problems with both unless I can do some modifications. I do use a fax on occasion but it's not important if I can't get it to work. Am I on target with my evaluation?"

The first response to Falcon20 comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member NISMO.

"When it comes to Tivo there is a work around you have to change the way you Tivo box dials out by entering one of the many prefixes available," NISMO writes." When it comes to your alarm you need to make sure they support a Voip line if they do normally companies like ADT I know offer something called "cell back up system" it just depends if your alarm offers that keep in mind that is an extra expense to you.

"Faxing you can make work as long as you make the proper adjustments to both your fax and your Vonage adapter main thing is make sure your fax has adjustable modem speeds or baud rate and make sure you can turn of your error correction mode if your fax includes that ... ," NISMO then adds. "More info can be found at www.voipfrustration.com.

But then read this from Vonage Forum Member x2kcobrar:

"I have 3 TiVo's and just recently moved from my old AT&T land line to Vonage across my Internet connection. I am now having problems getting my Tivo units to successfully connect to DirecTV across my Vonage line.

If I go through the menu setup on the Tivo and have it test the phone line, it successfully connects. However, if I then go back to the setup screen and have it connect to the DVR service (Direct TV and TiVo), it fails on the first step and responds with the "failed to connect" message.

I assume there is a way to make this work, otherwise, Vonage would be losing a lot of customers. Someone please enlighten me on the exact configuration steps to make this work properly."

And then that's followed by a post from Vonage Forum Member miked2.

"When we had DirecTV's Tivo, it would not work with Vonage. We have since switched to cable TV, and got a Tivo Series3. I have it connected via the Internet instead of over the phone, so no problems now," miked2 writes.

"With respect to the alarm, if you're willing to spend a little extra, I can highly recommend alarm.com," miked2 adds. "These guys use an integrated cell phone to report incidents instead of a regular phone line, so it's inherently Vonage compatible. You can also do a lot of other neat stuff. I have it set up to email me when the system is armed or disarmed, and also email me when someone opens up the front door or the side gate. If we forget to arm the alarm when we leave the house, I can also arm it via smartphone or Internet."

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday, Vonage stock closed at $1.99 a share, a decrease of two cents (-1.00%) from Tuesday's $2.01 a share close, but then again, that closing price was a full 8 cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.91 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded happened to have been 987,827 shares.
