Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 18, 2008

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 18, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one from a Vonage Forum Member thinking of getting Vonage, and then there's another thread we shall look at which concerns IP addresses as seen in Vonage Caller I.D.  Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Allergeeze logs on to the Vonage Forum to establish a new Vonage Forum thread he has named, I have Verizon wireless....want to try Voip.

In his thread-opening post, Allergeeze writes:

"Do I need a phone line to keep my Verizon wireless? I'm not sure how all of this works if I want to try VOIP. Is there a place I can go to read what is needed. I'm not even sure Im asking the right question."

And it is at this point that our most frequent poster, Steve48, makes a post in which he offers this input:

"I'm not sure if you're asking the right question either, but I do know that you can have a cell phone, like Verizon wireless, and also a Vonage Voip phone. They won't have the same number, though.

"What you need to have for a Voip phone is a good broadband internet connection. I would suggest that you run the forum Voip speed test (under the forum speed dial dropdown menu). It will help you tell if your internet service is good for supporting VoIP. We can help you interpret the results if you post them here."

Steve48's post is followed in this thread by one from fellow Vonage Forum Member kronhead.

Kronhead, whose real first name is Don, writes:

"There is no reason I can think of for you to "need" a phone line at all to keep your Verizon wireless - other than if they insist on another # to be able to reach you - but Vonage can be that other # - they would not know the difference. But lots of people have just cell phone service these days.

"But you can also have cellphone and Voip with no problems. Different phone #'s, obviously. You can call forward from either one to the other one, call one from the other, etc. I got Vonage at first with a test #, then transferred my old home telephone # to Vonage.

"I will say that Sprint would not let me transfer my cell phone # to Vonage (and assign a new one) without treating it as an account cancellation - with the associated cancellation fee. Verizon may be different. I had hoped to have all my calls go to Vonage, and use their feature where they can ring another # (my new cell phone #) at the same time as my Vonage # - so I could get all my calls wherever I was, no matter which # they called.

Sorry if this is a lot more info than you wanted."

Vonage Forum Member xnewuser asks an interesting question, one which also the title of his Vonage Forum thread he has decided to start up.

The thread bears the title, Why IP address in Caller ID?

And for his opening post in this thread he has started, xnewuser writes:

"Recently I have received calls and found an IP address (63.77.214.17) instead of a telephone number in the caller ID," xnewuser writes. "My Vonage service is still working great, but this is something new.

"I don't pay too much attention to the caller ID anyway," xnewuser adds, "but am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and knows the what and why of the phenomenon."

Several fellow Vonage Forum Members follow up with their own stories, but here's some related input and insight  in the post that KevKan made on this thread:

"I have also received IP addresses as the caller ID," KevKan writes. "It turned out the calls were from a firm where my wife works and they have a Voip telephone system. Evidently the system sends out the IP address for the line the person calls out on.

"On different calls from my wife, the IP address would change depending on which line she used to call out," KevKan additionally points out. "The administrator for the firm's phone system has the ability to change what is sent out as the caller id info......a phone number or text.

"The IP address must be the system default value and remains until changed," adds KevKan.

Vonage Stock Report

On today, Vonage stock closed at $2.05 a share, an increase of nine cents (+4.59%)  from Wednesday's  $1.96 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was a full 3 cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.92 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded had climbed on up to 1,050,881 shares.
