Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 11, 2008

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 11, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about setting up a network camera with a Motorola VT2542 with Vonage, and the other thread is concerned with sharing RJ45 jacks in a new home.  Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here's an interesting new Vonage Forum thread from Vonage Forum Member dbrusiee. This thread we now discuss is called, DCS950G Network Camera on a VT2542.

He writes:

"I am trying to access my network camera remotely via the internet and can't seem to find the right configuration that allows this. I have set up a fixed IP address for the camera and have set up Port Forwarding but no luck so far. Also I have tried to log into the VT2542 with Remote Web Access set up to no avail. Anybody have any experience with this configuration?

"PS: I see one reply requesting all kinds of information regarding my configuration. All I can say is if I knew the answers to all of these questions I problably wouldn't have a problem... What I need right now is someone to define exactly which menus to configure to enable remote access for the camera."

Then fellow Vonage Forum Member brian188 follows up:

"What configuration?," brian188 asks. "How is it set up? Modem -> router -> PCs, Camera, Vonage? What ports are forwarded? And from where to where? Etc., etc. Need much more info."

Next comes adrmp, who also is a Vonage Forum Member.

He writes:

"Read the manual and it is not all that clear. I am using a USB webcam and
Active Webcam. The system XPPro is set for static IP 192.168.15.2 and the application is setup for the cam for port 8080 and works great when viewing from 192.168.15.2:8080. Question is how do I config the VT2542 under the advanced selection for remote web access, remote SSL access and do I need to do anything under port forwarding so I can come in from the internet and access my road runner IP > the 192.168.15.2:8080. If so, anyone with How To directions on the VT2542 ? "

And then comes this post with specific set-up instructions from fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56:

"Set up port 8080 to forward to 192.168.15.2 (Advanced-Port Forwarding-User) Your Roadrunner IP can be found looking at 192.168.15.1 (your Vonage router) on the HOME tab under WAN," ed56 writes.

"BTW, you will NOT be able to access the public Roadrunner IP from within your network, as most lower end routers do not provide loopback. You will need to go offsite to check if it works."

Now here's this thread bearing the name of, Sharing RJ45. This thread, which is on the Vonage Hard Wiring-Installation Forum section of the Vonage Forums, has been started up by new Vonage Forum Member cparizman.

He writes in part:

"I have a new home that is wired in every room for both rj11 on one wall and rj45 on another wall. Of course, each room the best place for a phone is not always near the rj11 jack, but rather the rj45.

I have a patch panel for all the phone lines, with IN and OUT rj45 jacks. (http://www.elanhomesystems.com/product/sw/th48.asp) All of the rj11 jacks hardwires to the panel work great. All of the rj45 jacks I have are terminated with rj45 male plugs. I can plug 1 line into the OUT jack on the panel and it works fine. I tried plugging a hub (not a switch) into the OUT and then plugged in a few of the rj45s. No dial tone.

Any thoughts on what I can do here? I'm guessing something like http://www.elanhomesystems.com/product/sw/th412.asp would work, but it seems overkill for only 2 or 3 lines.

Thanks for any help."

Well, help comes from our most frequent poster, Steve48, who now has amassed more than 4,200 posts (more than 1,000 over any other Forum Member, active or inactive).

"What you tried to do with the hub ought to work, so I'd try to figure out why it didn't before investing in elaborate hardware. I'm assuming that a hub just ties corresponding contacts for the various ports on the hub together in parallel, like a telephone port Y splitter," Steve48 recommends.

"Start troubleshooting by plugging the hub into the out port as you did," he adds. "Plug a phone directly into one of the RJ45s on the hub. Do you get a dial tone that way."
