Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - January 4, 2008

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

January 4, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let us catch up with some important Vonage news. Then we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a travel-size adapter and router that Vonage could be used with, but then there's another thread as well and that is concerning a Vonage line that seems to have been cutting in and out. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Announces Settlement of Two Patent Disputes

Over the holiday break, Vonage settled two patent suits, one with Nortel and the other with AT&T.

On December 31, Vonage and Nortel announced that they have agreed in principle to end the litigation pending between them. The contemplated settlement involves a limited cross license to three Nortel and three Vonage patents and will not call for any monetary payments by any party. Claims relating to past damages and the remaining patents will be dismissed without prejudice. The settlement is subject to final documentation.

"We are pleased to resolve this issue and enter into a productive relationship with Nortel," said Vonage Chief Legal Officer Sharon O'Leary.

Then, before that on December 21, Vonage and AT&T said they have entered into a definitive agreement to settle their patent dispute. The companies had agreed in principle to a settlement on November 7.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member xplrer had a question relating to, Travel Size Voip Adaptor w/Router - Multi Voltage, he begins a Vonage Forum thread bearing that title.

"What is the smallest size ip phone adaptor w/router that is made for those of us who travel abroad, e.g. countries where the power supply has to take 220volts?," writes xplrer.

It is at that point where veteran Vonage Forum Member roscopco offers some advice.

"If you are already a Vonage customer you can use Vonage Talk program that lets you make unlimited calls to North American numbers," roscopco writes. "All you need to do is download the program, have a usb phone or head set with microphone. This way you can leave your adapter home.

Here is the link:

Not the answer you wanted, but much easier to travel with, I use it all the time while traveling."

So next we have Vonage Forum Member quierosurf  beginning a new Vonage Forum thread that he has decided to call,, phone keeps cutting out - why now?

Here's what quierosurf has written:

"really frusterated...

ive had Vonage for a year or so. aside from the static once in a while, its okay. ive had the same setup the whole time that just started not functioning correctly. nothing changed, just randomly started being dumb and after 3 days of emails and checking things and restarting things and talking to... well... here's where i am at. here is how it is setup:

i have a dsl line coming into my house. i have a phone line that runs from the wall jack to the actiontec dsl modem. it is also a wireless modem/ router combo thing. my dsl modem/ router is connected to my Vonage device with the blue cord. it is also connected to my desktop via an ethernet cord-- . (is this necessary if its a wireless modem and i dont use my desktop to access the internet anymore now that i have a laptop?)my vonage device is connected to my phone and (until recently) it was also connected to my dsl modem/router with the yellow cord ... after a few emails and reading and resetting yada yada... i realized this connection was not necessary, so its currently unplugged.

i have a laptop that connects to the wireless signal given off by the dsl router/ modem.

recently, here is what has been happening:
1. phone cuts out when making calls - both parties cut off
2. conversation allowed for 2 mins, then cuts out one or both parties.
3. after every hangup/ cutoff, the phone says "connecting"
4. i made a few calls (attempted) watching the Vonage box and the internet light (which was lit) goes off when im in the middle of my 2 minute call.

all the lights on my dsl modem/ router are on, solid, normal.
with the phone on the hook, my Vonage device phone1 light blinks orange (i have cleared my voicemail so i dont know why it blinks orange), my internet light is green and solid and - until i unplugged the unnecessary yellow cord going back to the dsl box- my ethernet light was solid too.

am i stupid or am i missing something?
help"

So help indeed, comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman, who has written:

"First, try reading this post and detailing this information.

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7191.html

It will help people to troubleshoot the issue.

Second, you mentioned that you use your laptop now and don't use the desktop anymore. Did this change happen around the same time you started to have problems with Vonage? Just wondering if the you might be having a wireless interference issue."

Vonage Stock Report

On today, Vonage stock closed at $2.21 a share, a decline of nine cents (-3.91%)  from Thursday's  $2.05 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was a higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.20 a share.
