Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 19, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about connecting a wireless print server with Vonage, and then we shall discuss a thread about getting Vonage to work with a fax line as well as a connection to TiVo. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member sdjones asks a question in a new Vonage Forum thread he has entitled, Can I Connect a Wireless Print Server?

"I am trying to help a friend set up a wireless print server at her house," writes sdjones. "She has a cable modem connected to a Vonage wireless router (a Motorola VT2542, I think). Her printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 925 with a USB connection.

"With this router and printer, is it possible to connect a wireless print server to this network?," sdjones asks. "If so, any recommendations?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman supplies this answer:

"In general yes this should work with the devices she has.

"One note on the printer because I have no idea what that model is.

"Most All in one printers (printer, fax, scanner) will NOT work from a print server, wired or wireless. Many will work just as a printer, but the other functions will not work. (The one bad exception I know to this is that most print servers don't seem to work at all with the Dell All in one printers)

"The Vonage router should work fine, what I would focus on is getting a print server that supports Epson printers. Even this is hard, but don't let it bother you too much. They only list a small set of compatible printers, because these are the ones they actually tested against.

"I personally use a wired D-Link print server, but for no reason other than it was in sale when I needed one. Any of the major brands (Dlink, Linksys, Netgear) should work.

"I would recommend that you buy it at a local store so that it is easy to return if it doesn't work for you.

Now how about we go to the Fax-TiVo-Alarms section of the Vonage Forums and discuss a thread which has been given the title of, Two problems: TIVO & Alarm system. This thread had been started by Vonage Forum Member Falcon20.

In the post he wrote to open this thread he's started, Falcon20 wrote this:

"I'm considering Vonage but from reading the forums there seems to be two issues (for me that is) that could cause me problems," Falcon20 writes. "One is I have DTV and an old alarm system that has worked beautifully for the last 15 years.

"It looks like if I switch to Vonage that I will have problems with both unless I can do some modifications," adds Falcon20. "I do use a fax on occasion but it's not important if I can't get it to work. Am I on target with my evaluation?"

A response comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member NISMO.

"when it comes to TiVo there is a work around you have to change the way you TiVo box dials out by entering one of the many prefixes available," NISMO writes. "When it comes to your alarm you need to make sure they support a Voip line if they do normally companies like ADT I know offer something called "cell back up system,"

"It just depends if your alarm offers that keep in mind that is an extra expense to you," NISMO explains further. "Faxing you can make work as long as you make the proper adjustments to both your fax and your Vonage adaptor main thing is make sure your fax has adjustable modem speeds or baud rate and make sure you can turn of your error correction mode if your fax includes that ..."

Then as NISMO ends his post, he notes that more info can be found at
