Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 17, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about leaving messages on Vonage calls, and then the other thread happens to be about some Vonage set-up issues. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Leave a Message is a new Vonage Forum thread started up by Vonage Forum Member johnfarrow.

Beginning his thread that he started, johnfarrow writes:

"When someone calls our number, they get a message to "Leave a message". this is on when I select *78," writes johnfarrow. "But it wont shot off when I select *79. Where in Vonage can I turn off "Leave a Message?"

Noting a Vonage alert posted over the weekend, fellow Vonage Forum Member SuperDave wrote:

"There is a major problem, has been for days. Here is the message on my dashboard:

Service Announcements
Certain customers may be experiencing an issue with no dial tone, having trouble registering their device or feature settings not taking effect. We are aware of this situation and are currently working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Some lines have already been repaired and your device may just need a reboot. Feature settings may take up to 24 hours to take effect. We will continue to update this website with additional information. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Then, earlier on Monday, the issue was resolved. In case any Vonage users are still having problems with these settings, Vonage Forum Member roscopco recommended to log into the Vonage site for your account, and click on what you want to change."

Vonage Forum Member miltonrods has begun a thread which he has been calling, problem setting up Vonage.

To open his thread, miltonrods supplied this information in his opening post:

1. Your location - Honavar India
2. Your ISP name and type - BSNL (ISP Name) & ADSL UT300R2U
3. Upload and download speeds - Connection speed is 256 kbps (not sure what my upload/download speeds are)
4. Modem make and model - UTSTARCOM UT300R2U
5. Type of Vonage adapter used - Motorola VT2142
6. Setup of Network - BSNL modem---->Vonage Motorola VT2142 adapter---->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing - Power light on Vonage device is solid green. When i connect my phone on phone1 line i get a msg that this line is not authorized for use.
but this worked well while i used it in US

Strange thing is the power LED is green.

Things I have changed so far. I have changed the PC to DHCP and the PPPoE on VT2142 has been set to DHCP with the ISP username and password. Tried all set of resets possible.. but still no luck."

This information encourages fellow Vonage Forum Member Steve48 to write:

"It sounds as if you've set it up correctly. Are you able to access the internet with your computer plugged into the VT2142?," asks Steve48. "Keep in mind that while BSNL probably isn't interested in helping you with Vonage, they should be willing to help you to set up a router. Technically, that's what the VT2142 is."

But then miltonrods replied:

"I'm not able to access internet through the Vonage router. Do I need to change any settings on the BSNL modem?

"Do I need to press the reset button on the Vonage modem to get its default settings?," he asked. "Do I need to change any other settings besides using ISP username/password on the PPPoE settings on the WAN side of Vonage router? Current settings NAT and FIREWALL is checked, Keep alive is 0 mins, AUTO, MTU=1492 bytes and enforce MTU is CHECKED."

Steve48 follows with a lengthy post in which he addressed miltonrods' questions one by one and then after doing that, added some pertinent insight and advice:

miltonrods wrote:
I'm not able to access internet through the Vonage router.

Steve answered, OK, that's important.

miltonrods wrote:
Do I need to change any settings on the BSNL modem?

Steve answered, Don't know yet.

miltonrods wrote:

Steve answered: Not yet.

miltonrods wrote:

Current settings
NAT and FIREWALL is checked, Keep alive is 0 mins, AUTO, MTU=1492 bytes and enforce MTU is CHECKED.

Then came this response from Steve48, who is our most frequent poster by far:

"Probably not. The important thing here is that you can't get to the internet. That means that either the router isn't successfully logging in to the system, or your computer isn't connecting with the router, or both. First, you've changed your computer to DHCP (Hopefully you wrote down the settings that you had before you did that.) That was the right thing to do to get the computer to talk to the VT2142 using the VT's default settings.

Since you've mentioned playing with the VT's settings, it sounds as if you can log on to the VT's admin page. Is that correct? Is it still correct now?

If you can, then the problem is not with the interface between your computer and the VT. Now work on the WAN settings for the VT. Make them just like the settings that you used to have on your computer.

One thing- some DSL modems "learn" the ID (MAC) number of the computer to which they first connect, and won't work with any other. That could be the case with yours. To overcome that, turn off your modem. Unplug it and let it sit for several hours. Then, when you bring it back up, have the router attached and unpowered. After the modem settles down, power up the router and let it be the first thing that the modem sees. Alternately, you can try cloning your computer's MAC in the VT."

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday, Vonage stock closed at $2.05 a share, a decline of four cents (-1.95%)  from Friday's $2.09 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was  higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.00 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded had achieved the mark of 1,016,230 shares.
