Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we will catch up on some Vonage news. Then, we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about not being able to receive some incoming Vonage calls, and the other is all about the experiences of one Vonage Forum Member getting his old phone number transferred to Vonage. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.



In The News

Vonage Seen As Solution To Higher Holiday Phone Bills

A telephone poll, conducted by Vonage Canada amongst 1,021 respondents from across Canada between November 22 and 25, 2007,revealed that Canadians overwhelmingly prefer the telephone as their primary means of communication during the holidays. Almost 70 percent of respondents plan to use the telephone to stay in touch with out-of-town family and friends during this upcoming holiday season, surpassing other forms of communications such as regular mail, email or face-to-face visits. 

Regardless of who is calling, traditional telephone conversations still remain expensive, in the opinion of those polled. Despite their preference for the telephone, 20 percent of Canadians expect to experience a higher phone bill during the holiday season than any other time of year. Additionally, 15 percent also say the high price of long distance will limit their ability to stay connected with family and friends. 

"The telephone is consumer's top choice for communication, yet many Canadians still don't have a choice when selecting a home phone service provider," said Joe Parent, vice president of marketing and business development, Vonage Canada. "This allows the Telco to charge as much as they want. It's no wonder that most Canadians' phone bills are higher during the holidays than any other time of year."

I'd suspect U.S. consumers would be interested in these findings, and Vonage's solutions, as well.

But before we move on to a couple of interesting Forum threads, don't let me forget to mention that in keeping with that news item I just wrote about, we have a Vonage Canada Forum section here on the Vonage Forums. On The Vonage Voip Forum  

Vonage Forum Member zorigo reports a "strange problem," which he uses as the title of the Vonage Forum thread he's worked up and is calling Strange Problem.. 

"I have kind of a strange issue. My main number does not work for incoming calls," zorigo writes.". When people call, they get a message stating that ..."this person is not accepting calls...blah, blah, blah". However, I can dial out just fine. To make things even more strange, my virtual numbers work just fine - incoming and outgoing.

Zorigo adds that he is displeased about this situation because this is the number that he uses in the yellow pages and his customers are emailing me and asking him if he went out of business.

It is at this point that fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56 reads zorigo's post and follows up with a suggestion about a possible cause for this issue.

"Never had this problem, but check your do not disturb settings on your Vonage account features page," ed56 suggests that zorigo do. "If it is off, turn it on, apply then turn it off and re-apply. May just help."

Vonage Forum Member BillK has been experiencing issues porting his old phone number to Vonage. Because of this, he has decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread and entitle it, No Telephone Service.

BillK starts off this thread by writing:

"At a friend's urging, I signed up with Vonage on 11.26.07. I received the confirmation email on 11.27.07. I received another email on 11.29.07 saying that my number transfer would happen on 11.30.07. And as the email stated, the number transfer did happen on 11.30.07. The problem is that the adapter still has not shipped.

"That leaves me with NO telephone service. I'm posting this message in the hope that someone can step up and get me telephone service within the next two business days.

"I have called Vonage ... requesting that Vonage overnight the adapter to me, but I'm told nothing can be done to do that. I don't understand why another adapter can't be shipped overnight and I simply refuse delivery on the one that hasn't shipped yet.

"Can someone help me or am I without telephone service for the foreseeable future? My friend is constantly raving about Vonage. He received his adapter a week or two prior to his number transfer. I'd hate to start off my relationship with Vonage in the manner it appears to be heading.

"Thank you and please take this message as it is intended - simply a request for help and NOT a rant."

Forum Member roscopco writes:

"This is not an official Vonage forum so we have no control over vonage. usually it takes a few weeks to transfer a number to Vonage.

The only option you would have is go to a store and buy an adapter but then you will have 2 of them so that isn't really going to help you.

If you have a Vonage user name, maybe customer support can tell you what it is, then you can download Vonage Talk and use your computer to receive the phone calls, works like Skype you need a microphone and head set."

He then posts the link to Vonage Talk, which is:

Vonage Forum Member emberwilde offers this:

"So sorry about your experience. since Vonage switched carriers, the delivery timeframe has been pretty good. probably because of the increase in sign-ups due to the holidays, there's now a lag in fulfilling orders. what i can suggest is you call up Vonage and talk to an acct manager or even a tech support rep. let them know your concerns and they should be able to give you some form of credits for all the hassle.

"What i also know is that they can advise you to purchase a device at a retail outlet and ask you to call back in so they can give you a credit for the amount you paid for the device. you can then add the device to your acct & it should be active within 24hrs. as for the device you'd be receiving, you can simply refuse delivery and it will be returned to Vonage at no cost on your part."

And then last, but certainly not least, are these words of wisdom from fellow Vonage Forum Member pdhenry:

"A lesson learned for others is that while you might save $10 by immediately porting your old phone number to Vonage, in practice it's better to call-forward your old service to your (temporary) Vonage number until it's set up and working to your satisfaction. Only then should you terminate your old service and transfer your number.

"In my case I forwarded from my Verizon number to my Vonage number for about 3 weeks until I decided that I was going to stay with Vonage. Then I initiated the transfer, which went through as scheduled. Never had to turn off call forwarding from Verizon."

Vonage Stock Report

Today, Vonage stock closed at $2.03 a share, a dip of three cents(-1.46%)  from Friday's $2.06 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was  higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.02 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded during today's regular trading hours had been figured up to land at 647,770 shares.
