Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about voice quality, and the other is having to do with recommendations for routers to use with the Vonage service. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum  

Vonage Forum Member deanbrew begins a new Vonage Forum thread which he has named, Choppy Sound - People think I'm on a cell phone.

At first, deanbrew writes a thread-opening post with his setup and test results details:

1. Blair County, PA
2. Cable - Atlantic Broadband
3. Cableco says 320Kbps and 3Mbps
4. Motorola SB5100 Modem
5. Linksys PAP2
6. Modem wired to Linksys wireless router WRT54GS wired to Vonage Adapter with phone lines plugged into Vonage adapter

7. I am experiencing choppy, broken up audio. I notice it is worse when someone is on the internet, especially when downloading something or opening pages, but it is bad at other times, too. Often, people I am talking to ask me if I'm on a cell phone.

Reviewing deanbrew's information, fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56 wrote:

"Try your Vonage device between the cable modem and the router. This should prioritize your Voip over the network computers."

Deanbrew then answered ed56 in this follow-up post:

"I don't see how to do that," deanbrew writes. "The Vonage adapter only has an input jack and no output jacks. There is no way to plug into the modem and then out to the router. And the modem only has one jack, so I can't directly plug both my wireless router and Vonage adapter into the modem. Make sense?"

At that point our most frequent poster, and that is Steve48, decides it might be time for him to step in.

Steve48 then wrote:

"Right. You can't do that with a PAP2. However, you should be able to set QoS in the wireless router to favor the PAP2, and that's the first thing to try.

"However, you also appear to have a serious issue with packet loss. Try temporarily removing the WRT and plugging your computer directly into the modem. Re-run the test. If it gets a lot better, then we need to look at the WRT. If it doesn't, then you have an ISP issue.

"If you're using a cordless phone, replace it with a corded phone until you've run any problems to ground. If it's a 2.4 GHz cordless and you want to continue to use a wireless router, then you'll probably have to replace the phone permanently."

"The same thing started happening to me Wednesday evening. I have a Linksys WRT54G router. If I plug my Vonage device directly into my cable modem, I get excellent service. Back in the router, and I get choppy service. So I'd suspect it's a problem with your router. Not sure what to do about it though. If you find out, let me know!

"I also tried setting the QoS to highest for the router, and can't tell that it made any difference., he added. "So probably a question for Linksys tech support."

Need Router and or Other Hardware Suggestions is a new thread that typifies lots of threads we get here on the Vonage Forum looking for equipment recommendations.

This thread has been begun by new Vonage Forum Member fn_tool.

And so fn_tool started up his thread by writing this:

"Please Help!!!

I original (3 year old) Linksys RT31P2 more or less crapped out. After the 1st 2 hour session of troubleshooting w/ Vonage, they sent me the same (remanufactured) router, and after the second 2 hour support session, it preforms more poorly than my 1st one.

At this time, all I want is to get Vonage working again (too bad they don't want to as badly as I do...but I digress....).

Any, in a perfect world I'd like a Wireless + Wired Ethernet Router/Switch with a Vonage phone port. Since I need it 2 days ago, I'd prefer to be able to get it retail instead of online.

I'm open to all & any suggestions.

Currently I have a Cable Modem & a Linksys Wireless Router with 4 ports.

If anyone cares:
DL: 6.6Mbps
UL: 1.5Mbps
Jitter 2.3ms
Ping time to less then 25ms round trip

Wouldn't you know that here comes Steve48 to write this advice:

"If you're happy with the Linksys wireless router," writes Steve48, "I'd stick with that and get a PAP2 or D-link VTA to handle the Vonage service."

So then fn_tool answered:

"Many Thanks to Steve!

I went right out & picked up a new PAP2. (I also got a Linksys wrt54g at the same time.) But I swapped out the old Vonage router,1st by itself and that did it.

I'm sold on the statement, "Vonage makes goods phone adapters but not so good routers". It's recommend to anyone just get plain adapter and plug it into your router.

A note about routers: make sure you have a decent one that does not get easily overwhelmed. I added the Linksys WRT54g because its decent has QOS adjustments and wasn't too expensive. I decided to skip the wireless "Boost" version to save a couple of bucks, it works 100% fine for me.

I set the router to give the phone adapter the highest priority all the time.

I'm happy with my setup," fn_tool added.

"Glad you got it working," Steve48 chose to reply. "In this case, I wouldn't be too hard on Vonage support. Apparently they did think it was the Vonage box when they sent you a new RT31P2, and the RT31P2 has a good reputation. Sounds like you just got bitten by two bad ones."

Vonage Stock Report

Today, Vonage stock closed at $2.06 a share, a dip of six cents(-2.83%)  from Thursday's $2.12a share close, but then again, today's closing price was  equal to today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.106 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded during today's regular trading hours had been tabulated as 706,760 shares.
