Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 3, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some good news. Over the weekend, we passed the 45,000 mark in registered Vonage Forum members since we began the Vonage Forum here back in March, 2003. And for the record, our 45,000th Member is mrkndrk. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, mrkndrk! We look forward to reading your posts!

We will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about QoS (Quality of Service), but the other thread is concerned with using Vonage along with Microsoft's XBox. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Can QoS be improved on VT2542? is the title of a new Vonage Forum thread that has been started on up by Vonage Forum Member ilogik.

And for his thread-opening post, ilogik was "logical" enough to include his Vonage set-up and test results:

"Below is my measurement, when I am on BitTorrent people on the other end complain of frequent dropouts but it doesn't happen when I am not transferring files. I thought this router is supposed prioritize voice packets?

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 14870256 bps
Upload speed: 1424160 bps
Quality of service: 34 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 85 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 25 ms
Average round trip time to server: 46 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 2.2 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.5 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 24
Estimated MOS score: 3.9"

Reading this post and the information included spurred fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman into writing this post in response:

"Sounds like the level of torrents that you are working with is overloading the router," butterman writes." I saw a thread here about problems with voice quality when FTPing large files that sounded similar.

"The answer was to use a separate router to do the QoS and not the Vonage device," butterman points out further. I know I had a similar problem when I started using a SlingBox at home. My call quality would go way down when using the SlingBox and then return once I stopped using it.

"In order to fix my problem I got a WRT54GL and loaded 3rd party firmware on it ( I used Tomato) and then setup my own QoS rules," butterman adds. Since then, my call quality has been great.

New Vonage Forum Member phil8657 has decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread and give it the name of, losing phone when logged into Xbox live.

"Based upon the symptoms, it appears as though Xbox live is causing me to lose phone connection," phil8657 writes. "Likewise, phone is causing me to lose Xbox live. Does anyone have any suggestions?"

Once again it is butterman with an answer.

"First thing to try is to connect to Xbox Live and then run the Voip Test located in the sticky thread and post the results," butterman suggests that phil8657 do. "Sounds like a QoS issue where you need better priority rules to give Voip bandwidth at all times and the results of the test should confirm it."

Vonage Stock Report

Today, Vonage stock closed at $2.12 a share, an increase of one cent (+0.47%)  from Friday's $2.11 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was  also higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.11 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded during today's regular trading hours had climbed up to 994,675 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
