Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 28, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 28, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we'll check on some Vonage news. Then we will go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about router configurations, and the other thread is concerned with using Vonage over Verizon FIOS. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here's a new Vonage Forum thread called Best config. with 2 routers +2 isp and load balancing. It has been begun by Vonage Forum Member rajesh122.

He writes:

"I have been playing around with my settings for a few days now.

note: Voip was perfect in the original 1 ISP > WRT54G > Vt2142 for 8 months.

Internet works fine but even with the QOS turned on in the LB router, voice calls get dropped and/or quality becomes unbearable (echo,garble,etc) It works fine sometimes though.

Trial 1 Scenario:

CBL modem > Dlink LB604(wan1)-----|
+ -------------> continued below
DSL modem >Dlink LB604(wan2)-----|

<static connections to LAN ports 1-4>

---------> L1(WRT54g w/2 PC's wireless) + L2(PC3) + L3(VT2142, 1 line voip) + L4(Print Sharing device)

This layout works well for other purposes like gaming, browsing, BT, etc. but the Voip just plain stinks even with QOS turned on and designated to a specific WAN/static address with all ports open.

After much aggravation, I decided to do this instead:

CBL modem > VT2142>Dlink LB604(wan1)-----|
+ -------------> continued below
DSL modem >Dlink LB604(wan2)-----|

---------> L1(WRT54g w/2 PC's wireless) + L2(PC3) + L3(Print Sharing device) +L4 (none)

This works great, except that when making a Voip call, all traffic stops to Wan1 (priority?)

I guess you could say that the problem was solved. I wish to know if someone has a better configuration."

"I would think your first set up would be ideal for all, provided the QoS is set up correctly," writes brian188. "Are you sure it is set up correctly?"

So then rajesh122 decides to write a new post in which he says, "Yes I followed the install guides specified by Dlink. I did dig up some posts about people using the same router without issues but they did not go into specific detail about their setup so I will have to wait for more comments.

"My main concern is that with the existing setup (VT2142 after modem) means that if the particular ISP fails, I will NOT have Vonage service," rajesh122 adds.

Loss of dial tone - Verizon FIOS problem? is a new Vonage Forum thread in which Vonage Forum Member ChazE911 writes about what happens sometimes on the Vonage connection he has riding on Verizon's high-speed broadband FIOS network

First, ChazE911 provides his Vonage set-up and test results:

Northern Virginia, Verizon FIOS 15MB up / 2Mb down
Actiontec MI424WR, Motorola VT1005V (replaced with Linksys PAP2)
Actiontec -> Voip adapter

Vonage Voip test results
Download 15,568,032 bps
Upload 1,865,192 bps
QOS 99%
RTT 11 ms
MaxPause 86 ms

And then, ChazE911 describes the relevant issue here:

"I've had Vonage with the Motorola adapter for three years, FIOS for about a year. Last Friday I lost dial tone, still had Internet access, both wired and wireless. Still no dial tone Saturday. Called Vonage, went through all the Level 1 BS I expected to go through with re-booting the Actiontec, the adapter, trying a different port, different cable, etc. I had already been through it all once myself, but... The adapter never got past 'two blinks', which indicated that it wasn't getting an IP address.

Vonage decided that the adapter was bad, so I went to BestBuy and bought the PAP2. Called Vonage to have them register it tonight, spent nearly an hour on the phone with them before the tech said he'd call me back in 5 minutes. (Its been two hours and he didn't call back, but that's a separate issue.) The PAP2 is still stalled at 3 blinks - supposedly getting the configuration from Vonage.

The system log in the Actiontec shows a constant stream of 'kern.Debug Clink Device forced reset' and related problems.

Any thoughts or suggestions?"

Reading this thread-opener post, fellow Vonage Forum Member red_dog offers this advice from his own experiences:

"Don't know if you got it fix, but in my case the Actiontec router went bad I just hoop up the Vonage, call Verizon to reset (or you could unplug the unit overnight). I added a wireless router after the vonage, all works well," red_dog writes.

Vonage Stock Report

Today, Vonage stock closed at $2.28 a share, an increase of two cents (+0.88%)  from Tuesday's $2.26 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was a full 11 cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.17 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded during today's regular trading hours had gotten up to 1,126,403 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us on tomorrow our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
