Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about improving voice reliability but the other thread has to do with a possible firewall issue affecting a user's Vonage V-Phone connection . We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum  

Here's a new Vonage Forum thread named Improving voice reliability. It has been started by new Vonage Forum Member 94rider.

To start the thread, 94rider has written:

"As a Vonage user for the last 5 1/2 years, I feel that I get value - but - having moved 8 months ago, my service seems to become less and less reliable.
I'm questioning my internet configuration, my equipment and mostly Comcast. Having moved only 1.5 miles all except the Cable trunk are the same.
My configuration consists of d-Link DCM202 cable modem with a Linksys RT31P2 phone adaptor attached. I then have two phone lines connected into my home phone wiring. Three phones are plugged in, one for my wife's office and two to wireless phone consoles (one Siemens and one Uniden) In addition, I have two more routers, an old d-Link wired and a newer d-link wired/wireless plugged into the Linksys router/phone adaptor. Everything participates in the same subnet with DHCP configured only on the Linksys router.

"Performance seems to average about 6 MB downloading and 600 KB uploading. Rebooting everything seems to solve the problems about half the time. Perhaps the easiest upgrade is to go to Comcast VoIP, as they keep trying to sell me, but I'm too obstinate to listen. The next easiest upgrade is to replace the 6 year old (???) Linksys router/voice adaptor, but with what, and why?

"For the most obstinate, I wish to know is Voip something Comcast can detect and degrade? (I've several friends in the same boat).
Any knowledgeable response would be appreciated."

This post inspires fellow Vonage Forum Member VoipFrus to write a follow-up post in which he asks, "By less and less reliable, what are you saying? Do you get no dial tone or is it just an issue with voice?"

Answering back, 94rider replies:

"Over time (a period of days usually, but sometimes sooner) quality declines in all areas. Sometimes there is no dial tone, more often a much higher incidence of fast busy, and even more often people are not able to hear us when we talk. We also have a high (10%) incidence of interrupted/dropped calls. Talking to people I talk to frequently, they often grade the voice quality (and usually find it wanting).

"My wife works from home 2 days a week. I try to reboot the Internet each time as that offers the best chance of her being productive."

This looks like an active thread we should be keeping our eyes on.

Vonage Forum Member scott99 starts up a new post to which he gives it the name, V-Phone causing SYSTEM to overload.

And so scott99 writes:

"When I insert the v-phone into a USB port on my work computer, the SYSTEM (as viewed in Windows Task Manager under the Processes tab) ramps up to 94-96% of CPU, maxing out the CPU's capacity. The vonagesetusb.exe will typically occupy 3-5% of CPU capacity. This is with no other apps running and 42 other active processes running. Without the V-phone the CPU normally runs at 16-18% of capacity.

My system architecture is a Dell Dimension 4600 with a Pentium 4 CPU running at 2.79 GHz with 1.50 GB of RAM. Memory usage during the use of the V-phone is running at about 469 MB.

I have no problems connecting or using the phone over my business network and call quality is good. I have also tried running through a modem cell phone modem connection with the network disconnected but have had the same result. I just cannot find the reason the SYSTEM goes into overdrive with the V-phone in.

Vonage tech support's best guess so far (after 2 hours of head scratching) is that the Sonic Wall or some other access parameter is interfering with the 6 second validation cycle the V-phone runs between itself and VONAGE. This doesn't sound like the problem to me but I really don't have another 2 hours to sit through someone in India telling me to turn off the firewall settings ( I can't the IT Admin has them set on group policy and besides, I have added an exclusion for .exe on the V-phone's drive).

Responding is in fact what fellow Vonage Forum Member dualsub06 writes. Assuming a firewall issue is the problem here, dualsub06 adds that "Opening an exception for a program does not automatically open the ports needed for that application to access the Internet.

"When I first downloaded Vonage Talk I couldn't get it past my firewall which is Comodo," dualsub06 adds. "Made my CPU load go through the roof. Added V-Talk as a trusted application and still nothing. I had to manually set rules to open all of the inbound and outbound ports. Once V-Talk had all of the access it needed it's RAM usage dropped under 5MB and the CPU usage went normal.

If it works at home for you but not work, you might not be able to use it there," he points out.

Vonage Stock Report

Today, Vonage stock closed at $2.13 a share, a decline of nine cents (-4.05%)  from Wednesday's $2.22 a share close, but then again, today's closing price was four cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $2.09 a share. At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares traded during today's regular trading hours completed the count as 1,031,663 shares.
