Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - November 13, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 13, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about wireless router set-up, and the other it is about a router set-up as well. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread he has opened and called wireless set-up, Vonage Forum Member madden23 writes this:

"I am an existing Vonage customer with a traditional setup with a cable modem and a broadband router," madden23 writes. "I would like to add a wireless router so that I can use my laptop anywhere in my house. Do I need to add a wireless router after the broadband router, or can I just use the wireless router and eliminate the broadband?"

It is at then that fellow Vonage Forum Member rgnok posts a reply with some input for madden23.

"Unless you have a very specific reason for keeping the current broadband router (which I'm guessing you don't or you would have mentioned that), you should get rid of it and simply replace it with a new wireless router," mentions rgnok." Search these forums and do some research and get a router that has good QoS (Quality of Service) controls to give you the best setup, though most any wireless router will work if you are happy with how things work now and you've not had to do any special "tweaking" to get happy with your current setup."

Next, here is a thread started up by Vonage Forum bikram. The title he gives this thread is, RT300 Help needed

Bikram writes:

"I have a RTP300 Sorry for being naive and asking such stupid questions... DSL Modem only (NOT having inbuilt router) 2 Mbps Setup 1) DSL to RTP300 WAN 2) RTP300 LAN to Switch 3) Switch to Computers Tried PPPoE, Username and Password >> Not working, No dialtone, NO Internet What i dont understand is the default IP is of RTP300 But My LAN (Computers) have 192.168.1.X can somebody let me know if ( a big IF ) i get connected what should i put in clients IPs, DNS, Gateway.

"Or Do i need to change this IP from to 192.168.1.X As before RTP300 my IP was assigned by the providers setup guy to gateway and internet was working fine after adding RTP300 I am not able to connect to internet and no dialtone. OR is there something wrong with my connections... I tried searching but couldn't find any setup similar to mine (No router)

Jumping on this thread with some solid advice is VoipFrus- one of our most active advice-giving Vonage Forum Members even though he just joined the Vonage Forum just about three weeks ago.

bikram wrote:

"Sorry for being naive and asking such stupid questions..."

VoipFrus answered,

"Definitely not a stupid questions. It can be confusing trying to set up a new Vonage router. first thing - when you set up PPPOE on your vonage, you then have to unplug both your modem and your vonage. (the Vonage now has a new password). Plug back in your modem and wait until your DSL (or online) light goes solid to indicate you are online. Then plug in your Vonage device. Power light should go through a series, then go solid. You should then see your phone light come on."

bikram wrote:
"As before RTP300 my IP was assigned by the providers setup guy to gateway and internet was working fine."

VoipFrus then replied,

"The reason your computer won't work now is because it was set to see the "Door" or "Gateway" to the internet as the modem ( It can't get to the internet because that is no longer its gateway. It is now the Vonage device. You should set your computer to DHCP - or if you need a static IP address, then set gateway to and IP addresses to (replace the XXX with 100 , 101 , 102 , etc.."
