Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 7, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router issue after a move, and then let's discuss a thread that is from a Vonage Forum Member looking for recommendations for routers to use with his Vonage service. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage stopped working after I moved (RT31P2) is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been opened by Vonage Forum Member MarvelousM.

MarvelousM writes:

"I have been using Vonage for over two years and last weekend I moved about five miles from where I had been living, we have already moved once and our Vonage service was entirely unaffected. We use Comcast and it was all set up yesterday and things were fine for about half an hour, the Comcast technician even used our phone before he left. Then, I lost my phone connection and my internet connection.

"After a long call with Comcast's tech support we determined that there was some sort of problem on their end but it had been fixed because if I plug the modem directly into my PC I can access the internet. So I've tried resetting the router about a million times, shouting at it that I hate it doesn't work, do any of you fine people have any ideas? My router is the Linksys RT31P2 and I'm in Philadelphia. Sorry I don't have the other info right now, I'm posting at work."

"When you connect the RT31P2 does it pick up an IP address?," asks Darrell_G, who is one of our most frequent posters. "Comcast may have set your IP to the MAC address of your computer thus not allowing the IP to be assigned to another networking device. If this is the case, you will have to contact Comcast to resolve this issue."

MarvelousM posts back:

"Would cloning the MAC address on the router help? The person I spoke to at Comcast asked for the MAC address in the modem."

"Yes, cloning the MAC address of the PC to the router should help," replies Darrell_G.

"Actually I think I tried that, what about the MAC address on the modem? Sorry if this is a goofy question, I'm totally at sea here," posted MarvelousM in response.

At this point, Darrell_G decided to write a follow-up post in which he wrote:

"You don't clone the MAC address of the modem. Have you tried recycling the power to all your devices. Shut down your computer system first. Unplug the power to your cable modem then unplug the power to your RT31P2. Wait about 5 minutes and plug the power to your cable modem back in first, wait for all the lights to settle then reconnect the power to your Vonage device. Once all the lights are on, start your computer."

Now we have fellow Vonage Forum Member tomp joining the discussion by making a post in which he's written:

"Just as with the previous Philadelphia poster, on 11/6/07 my RT31P2 Vonage router crapped out. My Comcast cable Internet connection and my Vonage dial-tone came and went all day. Today I plugged the computer directly into the Comcast modem and I'm getting the Internet fine, but if I route through the RT31P2 I can't get online. My Vonage line doesn't have a dial tone.

"I'll try rebooting everything again. I don't think I'll be able to clone the MAC address because the router isn't responding, via the Ethernet cable. (Also, I usually plug a second, wireless router into the RT31P2. Will cloning mess that up?) The lights on the router correctly indicate how many Ethernet cables are plugged in, but the light for the phone connection doesn't come on when it's plugged in.

"Any ideas? Could it be a Philly Comcast problem?"

MarvelousM, it is your turn now:

"I dug out the configuration disc for my router last night and ran it and miraculously my phone now works. My wireless access point now won't connect to the internet but that's a whole other problem."

And then tomp adds,

"After unplugging everything for five minutes I connected my computer directly to the RT31P2 with an Ethernet cable and was able to login to the router via Firefox. (, default password is admin, no default username) I fiddled around a bit, finally enabled MAC cloning, and cloned. Router reset itself and voila, the Internet and the dial tone are both back. Hopefully they'll stick around this time, and hopefully my wireless router will keep working as well (as I haven't tested it yet). Good luck to others with the same problem."
Now here is a Vonage Forum thread that has no replies as of yet (hint, hint). It's one of those threads that ask fellow Vonage Forum Members for equipment recommendations.

The thread I am writing about here is entitled, Which one should I get-VOIP/Router choice. This thread has been opened up by Vonage Forum Member mckay.

"I know that a lot of routers have *Cough*problems*cough*, and because I'm new to this, I don't want to make a bad choice, without consulting those who are used to the Voip realm.," mckay writes. "Anyway, below is a list of VOIP/Router combos---and yes, I really don't want a separate router and Voip adapter."

Then mckay writes his list of possible router choices:

Motorola vt2442
D-Link VWR
Motorola vt 2542
Linksys RTP300
Linksys RT31P2

"Can somebody take 3 out of the list that they feel would be a reliable choice?," mckay asks. "Reliability is my #1 concern, followed by the optional preference of having the ability to have a static DHCP server on the router."
