Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 6, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a connection-sharing issue, but then there's another thread I am going to write about and that has to do with what probably is a router-related connection issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

OSX Internet Sharing connection? is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been started up by Vonage Forum Member clownfish.

For his first post in this thread he started, clownfish wrote:

"I have a unique situation. I am stuck at a remote post overseas and want to connect my Vonage system to connect with my daughter in the USA.

I can only connect to the internet via my Mac's Airport connection. I do NOT have a router, and I can not get one for a while. My Internet connection is very good, and on 24/7. My computer is also on 24/7.

Can I use OSX's Internet Sharing (the airport connection to my Ethernet) and connect an Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Vonage router?

I tried this:

1. Turn on Internet Sharing. Set to share from airport to Ethernet.
2. Turned off Firewall.
3. Connected Ethernet cable to the Vonage's router's blue WAN connection. Got a green light on the back.
4. Got a blinking yellow light on the front of Vonage router. It never turns green.

When I connect another Mac to the same Ethernet cable, they get good internet service - so I know that part is working.

My Vonage router is a VTech 5.8 broadband phone.

If you have a solution, please explain in step by step detail, as I have limited Internet connection / TCP / IP knowledge. "

Fellow Vonage Forum Member VoipFrus attempts an answer. He writes:

"I think what you are trying to say is that you have the airport connected to an Ethernet cable, and your Mac connected wirelessly with another computer attached to it to do internet sharing. A Vonage device won't work this way. I know you said that you don't have a router - the Vonage device IS a router. Connect your Ethernet cable to the blue port WAN on the Vonage, connect the airport to the yellow port (LAN). Power cycle in order and you should be good to go! "

But then clownfish finds it necessary to make a clarifying follow-up post in which he wrote:

"Not quite.

I have my Mac sitting on my desk, and it connects to the Internet via wireless Internet through my internal Airport card. I do not have a hard wired Internet service. The compound I live at in broadcasts the internet to all users via a wireless LAN.

I have the Vonage router sitting on my desk.

I want to turn on Internet Sharing to go out through my Ethernet port. Then connect the Vonage router to this shared Internet Ethernet cable.

Will this work?

I heard of a PC guy who did this when staying at a motel that had wireless Internet service. He turned on internet sharing, and then connected his Vonage router to his PC. It worked - he claims. But I have not been able to do this on my Mac with OSX. "

New Vonage Forum Member taddy posts a new Vonage Forum thread with the title unable to connect to the Vonage network"

Taddy writes:

"I'm using linksys RPT300 Broadband Router, im system is connect as follow:

Payane(dsl modem) - DLink wireless router(DI-624)- Linksys Broadband Router(RPT-300)

I'm using it in Guyana, South America. I contacted the ISP they said that the didn't Block Vonage and it can be used, however its not connecting to Vonage

The issue is: with the connection I show above, the power and the internet light on the linksys router is on (solid blue) No other light is on... when I pick up the phone it say "THE Vonage DEVICE CANNOT CONNECT TO THE Vonage NETWORK" however on the PC from D-LINK (DI-624) router - the wireless network, the internet is working fine on them...

I restarted it several time over n over! My Vonage account is activate and everything, I used it 3days ago in new York, now I'm in Guyana with the linksys box and its not working!!

HELP!!!!"

Well taddy, help is on the way from several of your fellow Vonage Forum Members.

"Can you connect to the internet using a computer plugged into the LAN side of the RTP300? Is so what results do you get when you run the forum Voip speed test?," writes Steve48. "What results do you get from the same computer when it's plugged directly into the D-Link? What happens if you plug the RTP300 directly into the modem?"

And then comes this input from Vonage Forum Member kumakuma:

"There a no phone lights on the Vonage right? try to do these steps:

1.)try connecting the Vonage directly to the modem. w/o your DLink router.

2.)you dink router does not recognize your Vonage..do a Mac clone on your Vonage device. Connect the computer to the LAN of the Vonage.Open a web browser(IE,mozilla,etc..).type on the address bar.192.168.15.1..it will give you the router page of the linksys, use admin for username and password...find the word MAC ADDRESS CLONE. then click it.set MAC clone service to ENABLE.click the clone button, then click on SAVE SETTINGS..wait for it to finish rebooting itself..after it rebooted..wait for a few seconds. if there are still no lights on the Vonage device. unplug the power cable of the Vonage, dlink, and modem..wait for 30 sec then plug the modem first, followed by the Dlink, then the Vonage...before plugging each device wait for the other one to be stable."

Taddy follows up with this post:

"I try the but when I pick up the phone it say "this telephone line is unable to connect to the Vonage network. I restarted the system and everything"

And then VoipFrus comes to the rescue with this advice:

"OK, first off, if the power light is going solid and you are able to go online through the linksys, then the linksys is indeed online. What you need to focus on is why it's not registering with the Vonage network. What you are probably dealing with is severe latency on your internet (or jitter). If the device doesn't respond back to the server in time, then the device won't register.

Go to your command prompt and type in

ping yahoo.com -n 50

This will ping yahoo 50 times. you should see packets sent = 50, packets received = 50, lost = 0. Anything over 2% loss is a reason to call your ISP. Below that you will see minimum/maximum/average. These numbers ideally should be under 100 and within 25 of each other. Vonage can work with numbers up to 150, but above that you may experience problems. If your numbers are real high, or they have a huge difference between them, again, call your ISP.

Another thing you may want to try is a hard reset on your device. on the back, right near where the power plugs in is a little reset button. use a paperclip and push that button in for at least 30 seconds."
