Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 29, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 29, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, one about using a Vonage router with a wireless connection, and then a thread that is about a connection problem that might be a fault of the router. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Using a WRTP54G with only wireless connection is a new Vonage Forum thread started up by PLK7300.

"I have an unsecured wireless connection from my neighbor that I would like to use my Vonage router (WRTP54G) with. I noticed in postings that I could upgrade the firmware of a WRT54G to act as a client using sveasoft firmware, but apparently this firmware is not compatible with the WRTP54G," PLK7300 writes.

"Is there anyway I can use the Vonage router with a wireless connection and not a hardwired connection? I do have a WAP54g access point, but have not been able to make this work with the Vonage router either. With the WAP54g I understand I can only connect to another WAP54g when in client mode and this is not what my neighbor is using. I am also using a WRE54G range expander to enhance my neighbors signal. Any ideas?"

Maybe this isn't meant to be, because our most frequent poster, Steve48 replied: "I don't believe the WRTP54G can be made to do what you want to do."

Vonage Forum Member Woodson starts a Vonage Forum thread bearing the title of, D-Link VWR-VD / Deutsche Telecom / No Voip access.

Here's Woodson' thread-opening post, along with the details of his set-up:

"I have been a successful Vonage user in the US for about 6 months. I travel significantly within Germany and have experienced no Voip service when connected to the internet. I have consistent access to Deutsche Telecom's latest service, 25MB speed via DSL, speeds fast enough to receive their TV service.

Upon boot of the Vonage VWR Router/phone adapter, the power status light blinks two consecutive, then three consecutive, then solid light(s). After about 2 minutes it returns to two consecutive blinks and remains in that state.

My set-up: Source Line --> T-Com Speedport 300HS DSL Modem --> T-Com Speedport W 700V router --> PC(s) & Vonage D-Link VWR router/phone adapter.

Speedport W 700V Settings:
Default gateway:
Subnet Mask:
Wireless access point enabled
IP address assigned to Vonage device:

Vonage D-Link VWR Settings:
Default gateway:
Subnet mask:
DHCP enabled
Wireless access point disabled

I am unable to place the Vonage D-Link VWR in front of the Speedport W 700V router as the Speedport 300HS Modem is somehow synchronizing with the Speed port W 700V to authorize access to the internet. The Vonage D-Link VWR device uses one of the hard-wired LAN ports of the Speedport W 700V device. Internet access through the Vonage device via one of its LAN ports is not possible. Access to the internet using either a LAN port or wireless access of the Speedport W 700V device works great - lightning fast.

I have configured port forwarding (5061 and 5062 UDP) on the Speedport W 700V to point to the Vonage device."

Steve48 files the first response in this new thread of Woodson's.

"Will the Vonage Voip speed test run from a computer plugged into the Speedport? If so, with what detailed results?," Steve48 asks.

"Which port on the Vonage device is hooked to the Speedport LAN port? If it's the WAN port, what happens if you disable DHCP in the Vonage device, connect the line from the Speedport to a LAN port on the D-Link (instead of the WAN port), and connect a line from another LAN port on the D-Link to its own WAN port?," writes Steve48.
