Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 26, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let us catch up on some major Vonage news. Then, let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a Vonage call quality issue, and the other thread is related to wireless routers.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price and some huge news there.

In The News

Vonage Announces Settlement of Patent Dispute with Verizon

Because this news broke fairly late on Thursday, I thought it important to repeat it in today's edition of the Vonage Forum Digest

Vonage today (Thursday) announced that the cost of its settlement of a patent dispute with Verizon will be effectively capped at a maximum of $32 million, in addition to the $88 million already accrued and held in escrow. The $88 million includes a $66 million cash-collateralized bond, a $12 million second-quarter escrow payment, and a $10 million third-quarter escrow payment made in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Vonage and Verizon earlier today announced they have agreed to resolve their patent lawsuit. The terms of the resolution depend on how the Court of Appeals decides Vonage's pending petition for rehearing regarding two of the Verizon patents (the '574 and '711). If Vonage wins rehearing on either the '574 or '711 patent or if the injunction is vacated as to the '574 or '711 patent, Vonage will pay Verizon $80 million. If Vonage does not win rehearing on either the '574 or '711 patent, or if the stay is lifted reinstating the injunction, Vonage will pay $120 million, which includes $2.5 million payable to certain charities.

"We're pleased to put this dispute behind us and believe this settlement is in the best interests of Vonage and its customers," said Sharon O'Leary, Vonage Chief Legal Officer. "This settlement removes the uncertainty of legal reviews and long-term court action and allows us to continue focusing on our core business and customers."

The latest decision in the litigation came on September 26, 2007 when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit partially remanded a March 8 jury verdict in the U.S. District Court of Alexandria, Va. that the company infringed on three Verizon patents. The appellate court remanded the infringement verdict on the 880 patent and affirmed the verdict on one patent claim in each of the 574 and 711 patents. The appellate court vacated the entire damages award of $58 million and the 5.5 percent royalty, and directed that the trial court retry those aspects of the original case. Vonage's petition for a rehearing en banc was filed on October 10, 2007.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member broberts decides to open a new Vonage Forum thread. He's entitled the thread with the substance of his question, which is poor call quality when streaming video.

Here's broberts' thread-opening post, with his Vonage set-up information included:

"I have had service with Vonage for about 3 days. I have been testing out the connection for call quality. I haven't found any until now. It seems as though the call quality gets choppy and poor when I start streaming video (ex. YouTube). My guess is that the traffic is congesting my router. When I download a 329MB file of the internet the call quality is fine and I can hear the calls clear. But when I watch a video it gets very choppy. I tested it to see if it was my router by connecting my phone adapter (Moto VT2442) directly to the luck. I really want to get this problem fixed. Here is my current set up...

1. Internet (3000kbps/512kbps) to
2. Modem to
3. Moto VT2442 Adapter to
4. Router (Linksys WRT54G) to
5. Computers on Network

That is the path that the data follows. I have disabled the Firewall on the WRT54G. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman reads this post and comments:

"I would look here for some recommendations on a better setup. - A frequent contributor to this forum.

I don't know your Vonage device, but generally most people put the main router first and then connect their Vonage router to that along with other PCs, etc.

The point of doing this is so that the first router can be setup with QoS which will give your Voip traffic higher priority than video or downloads, etc.

Also many in here for the main router use a WRT54GL which allows 3rd party firmware to be loaded on it. People use firmware like Tomato and DD-WRT because they have very good setups for QoS.

As you can see from my signature I use Tomato. I think it gives great options and is really easy to use.

Hope this helps, but just keep in mind that your problem is setting up QoS on whatever router/firmware you use."

Wireless router with Voip and support for wireless phones is a new Vonage Forum thread begun by new Vonage Forum Member KLCobb.

"I have been using Vonage for a while now with no issues," KLCobb wrote. "However, I just moved into a new home and would like to move to a completely wireless phone system in the house.

"Can someone point me in the right direction?," he asks. "Is there a router that supports Voip with multiple wireless phones?"

The first response is from Vonage Forum Member VoipFrus.

"Your best bet would be a phone with multiple warless handsets," VoipFrus writes. "You would need to plug the base directly into the adapter and then you could have the handsets plugged into just a power outlet instead of needing wall jacks."

Next comes butterman again.

"I do that exact thing and it works very well for us. I have the Motorola MD681 with 4 extra handsets and that works just fine," butterman writes. "The MD681 isn't available anymore, but I remember people talking about a few Uniden models that they felt worked very well."

Butterman then suggests to KLCobb that he "search on Uniden or "cordless expandable" in this forum you should get back some recommendations.
