Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 22, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 22, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, both about adapter-related issues. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member jb1996 had a question about voltage for Vonage adapters. That being the case, he made the decision to start up a new Vonage Forum thread that he entitles, Vonage on 200Volts.

"Want to use Vonage on 220Volts and want to know if Motorola VT2442 Phone Adapter of Motorola VT2542 Phone Adapter would work with both 110V and 220V," hb1996 asks." If not which one should I look for?"

Steve48, who is rapidly closing in on 4,000 Vonage Forum posts, answers by writing:

"According to the label on my VT2442 power supply, it will work from 100 to 240 volts," Steve48 points out. "I can't say about the 2542."

Vonage Forum Member Tetreves offers up a new Vonage Forum thread with the title of Short-term up-time on RTP300

Tetreves includes both a description of this issue as well as his Vonage test statistics in this post:

In the past 3 weeks, my phone adapter has not been working properly. If I power it down, then back on again, it will work fine. After about 3 hours, however, it will not work. No dial tone, no incoming or outgoing calls. The RTP300 has been working flawlessly for several months prior to this.

I've tried resetting and restarting the RTP300, and every other device on the network. I've also reconfigured my entire network several times, including connecting the RTP300 directly to the modem, with no change. I'm fresh out of ideas short of canceling my service. Anyone have any new ideas? Here's the info you want:

1. Your location: Minnesota, area code 763
2. Your ISP name: Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds: Comcast says 6 MB/s DL, no info on upload, but generally about 2 MB/s
4. Modem make and model: Motorola SB5100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: RTP300
6. Setup of Network: A bit larger than average:

Cable modem connected to
- Linksys WRT54G which feeds:
- Vonage RTP300
- XBox 360
- Linux based firewall/NAT PC (running Smoothwall). Behind which is:

- A larger 16 port Ethernet switch with several home PC's connected.

The RTP300 was connected to the larger switch (behind the firewall) where it worked fine before. I moved it out to verify it wasn't the firewall affecting it. No network changes were made until after the problem started.

7. Issue you are experiencing: very short up-time on RTP300 (less than 3 hours at a time)

8. Voip Test:

Speed test statistics
Download speed: 7656864 bps
Upload speed: 2689736 bps
Quality of service: 96 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 49 ms
Average download pause: 2 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 66 ms
Average round trip time to server: 85 ms

VoIP test statistics
Jitter: you --> server: 2.6 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.4 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 45
Estimated MOS score: 4.0

Pretty decent internet connection...

Any thoughts or creative ideas?"

And then once again we have Steve48, who offers this answer:

"When the phone service goes out, do other things on your network continue to work? " Steve 48 asks Tetreves.

"If so, and given that you've already tried connecting the RTP300 directly to the modem, I'd surmise that either your ISP is taken hits that takes the RTP300 down, or the RTP300 is suffering a thermal problem," Steve48 adds. "Try cooling it with a fan and seeing if that makes a difference
