Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 18, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let us catch up on some Vonage news. Then, let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about security issues related to Vonage setup and then there's a thread I write about here having to do with a port-related question. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Setup Security for Motorola vt2542 is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been established by Vonage Forum Member macron74.

"I just got the new Motorola vt2542 and am trying to set the settings for WEP or other security so only my laptop can access the signal, but i am un able to do so," macron74 writes. "I am fairly new to Motorola and i need help to do this. Can any one help me with some quick steps on how to do it?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G is first up to offer assistance.

Open your web browser and log-in to the device at "". The default username and password is "router" without the quotes," Darrell_G writes. "Be sure to change the username and password. This can be done from Tools/User Management.

"Your wireless security should be set at WPA2 if your laptop can handle WPA2. For added protection, you can enable "Mac Address" filtering by adding your laptops wireless Mac Address or physical address into the access list field," he adds. "This option is located on the Wireless tab/Access list.

And then I see that macron74 makes a follow-up post with some of his setup details:

He writes:

"Darrell .... Thanks for helping me. This is what i done so far:
Changed pwd. Completed

1: Wireless Setup
Enable Wireless: check
Primary SSID: MIT
Hide SSID: check
Channel B/G: 11
802.11 Mode: Mixed

2: Advance: Left it as it was from default

3: Security
Selected: WPA/WPA2 (from this point on I'm not sure what to do)
Enable WPA2 Pre-authentication: Not selected
Group Interval: 3600

At this point what should i select?
Radius Server or Pre-Shared Key

Also should i do something on the laptop first or do all the set up from my mail(cable connected) computer then work the settings on the laptop?"

So then Darrell_G, having read macron74's posts, follows up.

"Your VT2542 is connected by ethernet to your desktop computer correct? First, setup everything on the desktop that's connected to the VT2542 and then we will proceed to the laptop," Darrell_G writes.

"Security: You can enable WPA2 Pre-authentication Group Key Interval should be 3600 Preshared key is the option I 've chosen," Darrell_G explains.

"This key that you create is case-sensitive so remember it exactly as you typed it in...We will need this key to setup the laptop to have access to the wireless. You should change the "SSID" to something that you prefer instead of using the default "MOT" SSID. The SSID that you create is also case-sensitive so be sure to write it down exactly as you typed it too will be needed to setup the laptop," Darrell_G explains further.

And Vonage Forum Member ateo has decided to open a Vonage Forum thread which he has been calling, , 'High level" tech question regarding QOS w/ Vonage:

"Vonage phone device: Motorola VT2442
Router: Netgear FVS124G
Connection(s): DSL + Cable

First off, my DSL isn't up and running yet but I have heard that VOIP does not work with round-robin packet scheduling on load balancing routers. It is possible to bind the protocol to one WAN port, which is my intention. However, that is another question for another day.

Currently I have set up the following QOS rules for Vonage:

53 UDP
21 UDP
69 UDP
2400 UDP
80 UDP (is this really necessary for voice quality or just reporting?)
123 UDP
10050-10150 TCP/UDP

These are both inbound (forwarded to the Motorola device's static IP that I set) and outbound rules. Tech support on the phone told me my device only uses ports 10050-10150 as opposed to 10k-20k as seen in some devices.

Are these all of the ports used by Vonage and my Motorola VT2442?

Bonus question: Has anyone had good experiences trying to bind Vonage communication to one LAN port in a dual WAN network?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member margulis9 has some answers.

"Usually the Vonage device will use 5060, 5061, and 10k-20k for RTP," margulis9 writes. "That's about all of the port information that is important. As far as using dual WAN ports and trying to setup QoS rules, you're on your own.
