Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 10, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 10, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about DSL-related issues, and the other thread concerns routers and phone jacks to use with Vonage.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member acdave24 begins a Vonage thread that he entitles, Issues with Windstream DSL and local telephone carrier.

And acdave24 writes:

"I have been a Vonage customer for about six months. Overall the service is fine, but I have issues whenever I try to connect to numbers on a certain local carrier. The carrier was CTC, but is now Windstream after a recent purchase. Whenever I call a # on this carrier, I get one of a number of different behaviors:
1) Dial tone rings once at normal volume, then becomes very soft and rings a few more times. It may/may not connect to the other party.
2) Other party sees a random caller ID entry for my #.
3) Voice quality is either delayed or very soft if call is connected.

I have moved the bandwidth saver down to "normal" and have called Vonage to correct the Caller ID issue. I haven't called them about the other issues, b/c it seems to only occur when I call numbers on this local carrier.

My local setup is as follows:
- DSL only (via Windstream) to Vonage Router. Telephone line sent out on pair 2 to switching box outside. All internal telephone jacks run on CAT5.
- 2 Cordless phones running off a single jack
- a wireless router (linksys)
- all the cabling is in a single wiring closet (router, modem, vonage, etc)
- not sure my Vonage router model, but it is less than a year old.

Again, I only seem to have problems connecting to this one carrier. However, that is the local carrier for our hometown so we make a lot of calls there, and it is quite frustrating. Any suggestions? Should I call tech support?"

A response comes from fellow Vonage Forum Member Miner49er. He writes:

"Call Vonage Tech Support. They have to put a ticket in to the engineers, or the 3 Party Carriers. If they fix it is the question. If its just one area code or prefix then its something they should fix."

New Vonage Forum Member hieg decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread with a title referring to NID or Network Interface Device. He's calling this thread, NID inside the house (phone jack).

In his thread-opening post, hieg writes:

"I want to spread the Vonage line to the phone jacks around the house. I read that I have to isolate and disconnect the line that comes from my regular phone provider in this case Bellsouth) before just plugging the phone line that comes out of the router to any jack.

Since I live in a condo, my NID is located inside the house  NID picture from BellSouth.(the one on the bottom). So I dont know exactly what to disconnect".

Then, hieg inserts a photo of his setup into his post. He follows that by writing,

"I think the white cable is the one that comes from outside the house. So, Should I just disconnect all the little wires that come from the white cable ? How do I open those transparent boxes that connect 2 wires together?"

Following up on hieg's questions is Steve48, who is our most frequent poster by far here on the Vonage Forum.

"If you're sure that it's the white cable that comes from outside the house, then just disconnecting it should do the job," advisees Steve48. "If you want to use Vonage on just the primary house line, then you could just disconnect the blue and blue/white wires from the white cable and that should do it.

"Those plastic connectors are normally permanent- once they snap closed you can't re-open them," Steve48 explains further. "You usually just cut them off and replace them. In this case, cutting a wire and taping the raw end should be fine."
