Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 8, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 8, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

There's some very big news today about Vonage's settlement with SprintNextel. After we review that, we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about an adapter issue, and the other has to do with the feasibility of multiple  Vonage devices on the same network. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price and how the Sprint settlement had a dramatic effect on that price.

In The News

Vonage Settles Patent Dispute With Sprint

Earlier today, Vonage released this statement:

"Vonage today announced that it has settled its pending patent dispute with Sprint Communications LP and entered into a licensing arrangement under Sprint's Voice over Packet ("VoIP") patent portfolio. The parties have entered into an agreement to resolve this patent dispute as well as entered into a business relationship. In addition, Sprint has agreed to license Vonage its Voip portfolio.

"The agreement is valued at $80 million, including $35 million for past use of license, $40 million for a fully paid future license, and $5 million in prepayment for services. On September 25, 2007, a Kansas jury handed down a verdict finding that Vonage had infringed six Sprint patents.

"We are pleased to resolve our dispute with Sprint and enter into a productive future relationship," said Sharon O'Leary, General Counsel for Vonage. "We believe this deal is good news for Vonage, our customers and our shareholders. It allows us to put this litigation behind us and continue to focus on our core business by removing the uncertainty of legal reviews and long term court action."

There's also a Vonage Forum thread on the subject, entitled, Vonage Settles Legal Dispute with Sprint.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jamn424 asked the same question to which he entitled his new Vonage Forum thread. That thread is called, Replace my wired adapter...chances?

"What are the chances that Vonage would replace my existing wired RT31P2 adapter for free," he asks. "I'm having problems with it thats why. Would they give me the wireless one?"

After getting some advice from fellow Vonage Forum Members Steve48 and Brawndo, jamn424 decides to take matters into his own hands. He reports back:

"Well I called them up on Friday. I explained to them the problem of the router and mentioned to them that I've been a loyal customer for like 2.5 years. I showed interest in getting an exchange for another router preferably the wireless one. He transferred me to account management and the lady was nice and not only did she give me the new wireless Motorola router but she didn't charge me for it either. So I got a free upgrade. All it's gonna cost me is that I have to ship the old RT router back. Not bad I say."

Now we switch to a Vonage Forum thread with the name of Multiple Vonage Devices with a Wireless Network. The thread is started by Vonage Forum Member SoKalEl.

"I am in the process of setting up a new office for my business and need some advice on how to setup our network," SoKalEl writes. "We currently have an 8 port Linksys router with an Linksys Wireless Access Point connected to the cable modem for network connectivity for our computers. We currently have 4 computers connected and have 4 ports open on the router.

"We want to add 4 Vonage lines to this configuration," SoKalEl explains further. "I am assuming that I can connect the 4 open ports on my router to the WAN port on the Vonage devices as long as I disable DHCP on the Vonage devices."

"Is this correct?," he asks. Any advice would be appreciated."

Just so happens that SoKalEl gets the advice he wants from Steve48 - our most frequent poster here on the Vonage Forum.

"Actually, you can get Vonage devices that handle up to 2 phone lines per device, so you only need 2," Steve48 points out. "However, you may want to go with 4 devices so that a failure doesn't deprive you of 2 phone lines at once.

"In any case, the devices can be plugged into the router as you've indicated," he adds. "You can use DHCP or static addressing as you wish."

Vonage Stock Report

This was a huge day for Vonage in that they settled the Patent infringement suit for Vonage. The news was certainly reflected today on the New York Stock Exchange, where Vonage stock closed at $2.57 a share, up $1.42 (+143.28%)  from Friday's $1.15 cents a share close.  That closing price was $1.16 higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price which was $1.41 a share. Reflecting a huge, record-setting  pace of trading, total Vonage shares traded on today wound up finishing at 34,817,832 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us on tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
