Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - October 5 - 7, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 5, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Because of a lack of new Vonage news on this Friday, let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router-related port forwarding issue and the other thread has to do with a dial-tone issue.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member chickoy3 has begun a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Port Forwarding Motorola & Linksys Routers in Series?

First, chickoy3 makes a post with his setup details, test results, and description of his current situation.

He writes:

"1. Location: travels to NY and Philippines, for this problem: Philippines

2. ISP: Cable21, cable

3. Download speed: 150kb/s, Upload: 60kb/s

4. Modem Motorola VT2142-VD

5. Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 140416 bps
Upload speed: 60360 bps
Quality of service: 99 %

Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 85 ms
Average download pause: 82 ms

Average round trip time to server: -- ms

Voip test statistics

Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 1
Estimated MOS score: 2.8

6. Setup of Network: ISP Modem -> Vonage Motorola VT2142-VD -> Linksys wireless WRT54G ver 7 -> 3 PCs

7. Issue: I have my Linksys router in series after the Motorola VT2142-VD because I usually take my Linksys router with me when i travel; in case i stay in a hotel with no Wi-Fi. But i need to Forward a Port for my uTorrent. I'm not sure if forwarding ports will be a success if i have them in a series with the Vonage device first. I just want to ask around before I try messing with them. Thank you in advance for the help.

8. 2nd Issue: Same Network Setup. I already set my Vonage setting to low voice quality (which my ISP speeds can handle) but when a PC is using up the bandwidth (i.e.. downloading files) the call becomes choppy. Can I somehow set the Vonage device to forcibly take all the bandwidth it needs when there is a call even if the PC is trying to take the bandwidth? I think this is very possible since i have my router and my PCs after the Vonage device. I just don't know which setting inside the Vonage device to change. Thank you again."

Very helpful Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G spots this post and offers some input:

"In regards to the 2nd issue, there is no setting within the VT2142 that you can change to force the device to use all available bandwidth. You barely have enough upload speed to make a Voip call let alone to be trying to download or upload a file at the same time while on a call. I would suggest while on a call, to suspend all other internet activities if you don't want choppy audio.

Is that the best internet speeds you can get there and are you actually getting speeds you're paying for?...Your download and upload speeds are extremely low for cable internet access. There may be a setting within the Linksys router to give the Vonage device priority but from the looks of your setup you have the Vonage device before the Linksys router so I'm not sure if even that would work.

http://portforward .com is a good reference for port forwarding."

And then we have chickoy3 writing this in response to what Darrell_G did:

"Thanks for the reply. The speeds that I have here are lame, I know but increasing the speeds would cost a lot more. These are the speeds that are "budget" value. Anyway, I hope for future devices they have an option for my 2nd issue.

"For my 1st issue, i guess, i will have to try messing up with the devices according to www.portforward.com's instructions."

Vonage Forum Member chikku started a thread which he called Not getting dial tone (I assume he means, "dial tone.")

Here's what chikku writes in his thread-opening post:

"We have bought an Vonage phone (Motorola - model VT2142-VD) and installed. It was working fine in US. Bought when we are trying to connect the same device in India. we are not getting the dial tone. When contacted the Vonage call center they said change the device and see. we observed that the Indian phone line jacks are having only two pins in the phone jacks. Where as the Vonage phone jack is having the 4 pins.

"Is this causing for the phone not getting the dial tone. I tried in putting the 4 pin rJ11 socket to 2 pin other end and tried still we are not getting the dial tone. can anyone tell what could be the problem or do we get separate phone with 4 pin jacks. or is there any particular phone model which will go with Vonage router. VT2142-VD."

Steve48 replies back in part:

"I doubt that the number of pins is the issue. Many times only the center 2 pins are used in an RJ11 jack. That will work with Vonage. Is the phone light coming on the VT2142?"

Addressing Steve48's post, chikku comes back and writes:

"The phone line led is glowing in the Vonage device. But we are not getting the power from Vonage to the phone. not sure how to check that the external jack is sending the signal or power to the phone. I tried with the 4 pin cord on one end and another end with two lines to the phone. I checked with the same setting only to phone line it was working but when tried with the same setting with the Vonage phone it is not working."

With this additional information now available to him, Steve48 writes:

"OK, just to be sure, we are talking RJ11 connectors, right? The issue that you've seen is that the jacks you've seen used in India have only two conductors rather than 4. When the phone is plugged in to the Vonage box and you take it off the hook, does the phone light on the Vonage box flash? It should.

"The conductors on an RJ11 are in line. On the Indian connectors, are the two pins in use the two center pins on the RJ11 or the two outer pins?

"If you have a phone cord with all 4 conductors populated and that you're willing to sacrifice, try this. Cut the cord in half and remove the outer cover insulation from one cut end. Then remove about 1/4 inch of insulation from each of the 4 wires. Twist the bare ends of the 4 wires together and plug the other end of the cut cord into the Vonage phone jack. Does the phone light on the Vonage box flash? It should."
