Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 3, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about daisy chaining two routers together and there's a thread I will also write about which concerns a router-related Vonage login problem a Vonage Forum Member had been experiencing. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member duhgman1 begins a new Vonage Forum thread which he has decided to name, Daisy chaining two rt31p2 routers together.

"I have two rt31p2 routers, each with their own phone line," he writes. "Router #1 is connected directly to the internet. It has 2 computers plugged into the 1st two ports, with the 2nd router plugged into the 3rd port. Router #2 has 1 computer connected to it. All 3 computers are able to access the internet just fine. Both routers get a dial tone just fine.

"But I cannot access the computers connected to router #1 from the computer on router #2, and visa versa," he explains. "The IP address for router #1 is In order to get the router #2 to work, I manually changed its IP address from to Any suggestions on how to configure these routers, so that I can access my printer on all 3 computers and access the workgroups and files? I have disabled the DHCP server on router #1 to no avail."

The first two responses have come in.

"When the computer on router two has the same network ID as router 1 computers, but is on a different network, it will never go through the default gateway," explains fellow Vonage Forum Member hakemon. "If the net ID is different, and you try to enter a router 1 computer, it will need to go through the default gateway, thus it works. I do that kind of thing all day, configuring networks, etc.

"It's best to just keep the computers on the same router, and if you don't have enough ports, get a switch," hakemon further advises. "Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if one of those routers don't ring. When I daisy chained my RT31P2's like that, all I remember is that one of them never rang, even when dialed via my cell phone, but sometimes did.

I've seen that fellow Vonage Forum Member kbfresh has some more specific advice for duhgman1.

This is what kbfresh has written:

"Try the following:
1. Change the IP address of Router #2 to
2. Disable the DHCP server feature on Router #2 (You can leave DHCP enabled on Router #1)
3. Change Router #2 from a "Gateway" to a "Router".
4. Connect everything the way you already had it:
*Router #1 to Internet.
*Connect the two computers to Router #1
*Connect Router #2 to Router #1
*Connect the other computer to Router #2

"Everything should work how you want if you do the above," kbfresh adds. "The computers should all be able to see each other."

VT2542 not able to log in to router is a Vonage Forum thread opened by Vonage Forum Member Salvo.

For his first post in this thread, Salvo wrote:

"I am a Vonage customer that has left for the time being since I do not have internet at my house since we just moved. I had to do a reinstall Windows on my PC and forgot my user name and pass on my router. I try User and it allows me to log in but their are not many options there. Router does not work either. I am not sure what I can do, if someone has a firmware I can upload to this beast, or a way to crack the router it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try to do a data restore on my machine to see if I can get the info off of Firefox."

But just a little while later, Salvo followed up with this update:

"Ok, had to keep messing with it and had to reset both the provisioned and non provisioned, finally I was able to get in with router and have back all my settings."

Then, just this morning, fellow Vonage Forum Member joeslick jumped on the thread to write:

I think you will find that you will lose all your setting every time the router reboots. See my thread Motorola vt2542 owners.
