Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 2, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have a good announcement. Early this morning, we logged our 45 millionth Vonage Forum page view since we went up in March, 2003. Every time you click on a web page here on the Vonage Forum site, that's another page view! Thanks for reading, and contributing! So let's see how quickly we can get to the 46 million page view mark.

OK back to business.

First let us catch up with some Vonage news. Next  let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage adapter problems, and the other is about temporary confusion on account of a Vonage number being assigned to two different people. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Paid Lobbyist $160,000, Report Says

The Associated Press reports that Vonage paid Fritts Group $160,000 to lobby the federal government in the first half of 2007, according to a disclosure form.

The firm lobbied Congress on legislation to ensure that users of Internet-based phones can access emergency 911 service and legislation to make it easier for consumers to keep their home phone number when switching to an Internet provider such as Vonage, according to the disclosure form posted online Aug. 10 by the Senate's public records office.

In addition to lawmakers, Vonage lobbied the Federal Communications Commission, the report says.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage D-LINK VTA - No Dial Tone, Incoming Call OK-ish? is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been established by Vonage Forum Member dalar.

And dalar writes:

"Ok so just a few days ago our D-Link VTA device just stopped working, no dial tone, however the phone rings when an incoming call is made.... but when we pickup the phone it is dead (the ringing stops) ... when we put the phone back down the ringing starts again until the caller decides to quit.

After consulting with Vonage technical support, they sent out a new D-LINK VTA...... same problem still occurs!! - they report that the VTA is logging into Vonage correctly and everything seems fine from that point.

Now one would think, change the phones right? - well I did !!,

I've used:

A DECT handset (digital phones with a base station)
A standard phone

I am in the process of finding another phone to try because I am wondering whether it is by sheer coincidence that both phones are screwed somehow?

Maybe the original VTA malfunctioned and sent some kind of spike to my phones when I was trying both of them to get the line working (even though the line was technically fine).

Just wondering if anyone else here has come across such strange issues.

Even Vonage seem baffled!"

Our most frequent poster, Steve48, offers up a post with his reaction and advice.

"Interesting problem," Steve48 writes, "Please provide the rest of the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum. If you're using house wiring and haven't tried disconnecting from it, please try that first."

"When you try to answer the phone, does the calling party hear you?," Steve48 then asks dalar. Are you able to try using the VTA with someone else's broadband service? I assume you're using a router with the VTA (?). Have you disabled firewalls in it? Try connecting the VTA directly to the internet service without a router and see what happens.

But interestingly enough, dalar follows up and writes this post:

"Thanks for taking the time to reply.

"The problem was eventually solved... it was the phones! - the original home phone just basically wouldn't respond to the 'speaker' pins, which explained why it would ring but you could not send/receive communication.

"The phone that I had borrowed from work turned out to be broken in the same way .... its simply an amazing coincidence that the 2nd phone was also broken in the same sent me nuts for days.

"Bought a new handset from the store and it worked likes a charm!

Now here's a really interesting new Vonage Forum thread. It is entitled Someone else has my number too? strange?? ideas ? and has been opened by Vonage Forum Member bhugs.

Bhugs, whose first name is Bree, posts this:

"I have had someone else answer my phone number twice now...does anyone have any ideas to why this is?? it has me worried that someone is using my number as well? or Vonage is doubling up on numbers?

It only happens when my computer is off. So my phone isn't on.

"The first time it happened, our power was out at home and my husband kept trying to call the house to get a hold of me. I wasn't home. He called my cell and told me the phone was acting funny and wasn't going to the answering machine. He said some guy answered and cussed at him to quit calling the number. Then the other times it went to a voicemail box that said it was not set up yet.

We got home to find our power was out. Didn't think much about it again, until this morning. the computer was out and I was calling my internet company to get help to get it back on. I was on my cell phone and when I dialed my phone number as prompted I accidentally hit talk so it put me through to a 3 way call. Some guy answered and was confused sounding, asked who I was, I said my name and said I was trying to contact my internet provider and he said I had the wrong number. I said ok and hung up but saw that on the cell phone was my "home" number.

"So I know I didn't accidentally dial a wrong number. its the number stored on my phone...I tried it again and it went to the voicemail saying my box was not set up. My internet came back on, my phone worked and all was fine.

"Could someone else have my phone service when my internet isn't working???? or are they tapped into my service somehow?? They are obviously annoyed or confused with our calls considering he cussed at my husband that day.

Here's an informative follow-up from fellow Vonage Forum Member kdf55, who writes:

"When your internet connection or Vonage is down, Vonage forwards the phone call to a number that should be set up in your account. (It is called a Network Availability Number) If someone had that Vonage number before you, had it set to forward when Vonage service was unavailable, then you got the number and never changed the forwarding number, that would happen."

Reading that, bhugs answers with a follow-up post in which she has written:

"This has been our number since we switched from qwest to vonage. But my husband remembers we had a temporary number that vonage gave us until ours moved over....could it be that temp number? so when its down, our phone number automatically goes to that old temp number maybe? where can I find the network availability number to change it?

"I found the network availability number and you are right! we had it forwarded to a cell phone number that we no longer have! So I corrected it and now we wont bother that poor person and it doesn't freak me out!"

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at 96 cents a share, up two cents (+2.08%)  from Monday's 96 cents a share close. Then again, the thing is that closing price was higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price which was also 96 cents a share. Reflecting a busy pace of trading, total Vonage shares traded on today climbed up to an end amount of 1,660,343 million shares.
