Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 1, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Not much new Vonage developments or news today. So on account of that, let's go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about running three Vonage lines, and the other thread happened to be about  what sounds like a router-related IP address issue,  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member techz begins a Vonage Forum thread in which he asks, 3 Voip Lines ?

And techz's two questions in his thread-opening post are:

1. Is there such a router that works with Vonage?

2. If not, what is the best way to setup 3 Voip lines with Vonage?

Responding is fellow Vonage Forum Member navydavy2001.

"Best Setup in my mind would be (2) Vonage Adapters (not routers) connected to a really good, QOS-enabled REAL router, like the Linksys WRV4400N or something like that," navydavy2001 writes. "Vonage devices SUCK at routing and running your Internet connection, so just stay with phone adapters and not combo devices. Get yourself a real good router. There are no Vonage devices that can do more than 2 lines as far as I know. Therefore, you're stuck with having 2."

In response, techz answers, "Got it. Thanks. I was hoping that someone might have designed a third part device by now. It seems like a complete untapped market in my opinion.

"But your suggestion is a good one, especially about the QOS necessity. Thanks."

New Vonage Forum Member seeker_ktf is, well, "seeking" an answer to the question he poses in his new Vonage Forum thread named RTP300 not remembering local IP address after power down.

Here's what seeker_ktf (whose real first name is Gary), writes:

"The title pretty much says it all, but here's the long story. I was away for a few days and when I got back my internet wasn't working. I couldn't connect to the router (RTP300) but the phone line was provisioned and working so I knew it wasn't a problem with the cable modem or the ISP. This is sometimes a problem when Vonage updates the firmware and all the settings don't get saved. Sure enough, the RTP300's local address had been reset to the default of 192.168.15.1. I changed it back to the address I want it to be, 192.168.100.1 and things still weren't working. Finally, I just loaded my last BIN file and everything was back in business.

"Unfortunately, if I power down the router the local IP gets reset back to the "15" default. It's strange, because everything else seems to be fine. The MAC address clone, for instance, is fine and so is the router's new password. The local IP address is the only thing I can see being different. (Some of the port blocking is missing too, actually.)

"I'm not in the habit of always cycling the power on the router (maybe once a month just to clear out the dust, so to speak) but it does get done once in a while if something isn't quite right. That’s' the one thing my wife feels safe doing. The truth is that most of the time when something's not working, powering down/up usually fixes things. Except now, doing that messes up my LAN settings and I don't understand why. It never used to reset the IP address.

"SO... does anyone know how to alleviate this? I use static IP's on all my computers and network devices and I really don't want to have to switch to the "15" subnet just to accommodate the router. Is anyone else having this problem? Better yet, does anyone have a solution? Is my router finally just giving up?"

"We've seen this plenty of times on other Vonage devices as well, and I'm sorry to say that to alleviate this I would move everything over to the 15.X subnet, just to accommodate the router," writes navydavy2001. It **** not being able to config your network the way you want, but you have to work to the limits of your crappiest device, I'm afraid.

"Either that, or just get a new device."

Next, seeker_ktf follows with this posted reply:

"I see. SO it's actually not a problem with everyone, just my specific device? Amazing. I can't imagine it will be very fun trying to talk Vonage support into a new device. Like you said, It really might be easier to just redo my entire network. bleah."
