Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

First and foremost, we'll get Vonage's side in today's court decision about SprintNextel's infringement lawsuit against Vonage. Then we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router that seems to be blinking in the wrong way, and the other is about one Vonage Forum Member's experience with Vonage tech support. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage To Appeal Court Decision

This just in from Vonage:

Vonage announced that it will seek to overturn today's U.S. District Court jury verdict in a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Sprint Communications Company L.P. and continue focusing on providing reliable, quality digital phone service.

Federal court jurors in Kansas City, Kansas ruled in favor of Sprint, finding that Vonage had willfully infringed Sprint's patents in providing its Voip telephony services, and awarding $69.5 million in damages, which the jury found to be five percent of Vonage's revenues over the infringing period. Vonage will ask the court to set aside the verdict, and if it is not granted, will vigorously pursue an appeal of the decision, including the underlying issue of liability and the willfulness aspect. Vonage believes any damages awarded are inappropriate. In addition, we will seek to develop technological workarounds that don't infringe on Sprint's patents.

"We are disappointed that the jury did not recognize that our technology differs from that of Sprint's patents," said Sharon O'Leary, chief legal officer for Vonage. "Our top priority is to provide high-quality, reliable digital phone service to our customers. Vonage has already demonstrated that it can keep its focus on customers and on its core business while managing ongoing litigation," she added.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member bjrichus decides to open a new Vonage Forum thread and give it the name of, Internet LED on router blinks and a moment of silence?

"On my (new) Vonage VT2142, I noticed that every 10 seconds or so, the Internet LED flicks off and then back on again," bjrichus writes. "At the same time as this 'blink' of the LED, if I'm on call there is a soft click and there is a very quick moment of silence. Its as if there is a really short dropout as the router is sending or receiving some sort of non-voice related data. Is this behavior normal?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G responds:

"It's normal for the internet led to blink on and off.

"Run the speed test and post your results. http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html."

Before he posts the results of his speed test, bjrichus writes,

"Ok. Thanks for the answer - I'll not worry about it now. The speed test reveals that I could run up to 12 'high quality' Voip lines over my link....... Not all THAT fast, but then it's what I've paid for, so....."

Now it is Darrell_G's turn to inject this important observation:

"Although it's normal for the internet led to blink on and off constantly, it's not normal for you to have moments of silence or dropouts. I posted the link to Voip speed test in my previous post for you to run and if you would post the results of the test. The results may help to determine what's causing your dropouts or moments of silence."

And so, then, bjrichus does just that:

These details give Darrell_G some solid information to go on. He writes a follow-up post in which he says:

"Your test results are very good. There's nothing obvious in your results that would explain your momentary period of silence. Do you experience this issue all the time when on a call? Do you have anything running (P2P file sharing or the like) in the background that may cause this ? Could you explain how your network is setup and is the router secure?"

Looks like this thread will be going on for a bit longer.

While we see complaints or frustrations with Vonage tech support here from time to time, new Vonage Forum Member xnewuser's experiences are so different that he has decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread that he calls, Good Technical Support Experience.

"My Motorola VT1005 died today, and I was not looking forward to calling, but the tech support was great," xnewuser writes. "I had to make two calls, and I could clearly understand both of them they seemed genuinely interested in helping, spent quite a bit of time with me to test and trouble-shoot (which is why I had to make another call... I had to leave for a meeting which cut the first call short), and exceeded my expectations to resolve the problem. I have a non-typical installation here, so I really appreciate their efforts.

"My telephone adapter is w-a-y out of warranty, but they are sending me a replacement at no charge," xnewuser goes on saying. "Yes, they had to go off-line a few times and put me on hold (I suppose to get management or a supervisor's permission), but it really wasn't excessive. Since he obviously got permission for a free replacement, I'm a happy camper.

"I could go on about the easy explanations, patience while I juggled cables and carried out suggestions, and the great courtesy that was extended, but... hmmm, I guess I just did go on about it," xnewuser continues. "Hooray!!"

Vonage Stock Report

Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock trading closed two hours earlier than normal because of the infringement court decision. Vonage stock closed at $1.81 a share, down 15 cents (-7.65%)  from Monday's $1.96 a share close but then again, that closing price was one cent higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.80 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on today climbed up to 1,097,900  shares.
