Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 24, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

It's a slow news day, so because of that we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage bandwidth usage, and the other it is about Vonage-related set-up issues involving the Motorola VT2542 Internet Phone Adapter & Wireless Router. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member bcbeatty asks an interesting question as the title of a new Vonage Forum thread he has decided to open.

The question is, How much bandwidth is used in a Month?

"How much bandwidth does Vonage use in a month?," bcbeatty in his post that opens this thread. "I'm not referring to 3Mb/Sec download/upload speed, a.k.a throughput. "I'm referring to if I talk for 500 min in a month how many MB does that relate to? or if I talk for 0 min What is the heartbeat bandwidth

"I recently got a bandwidth warning from Comcast and I'm trying to audit my internet usage," he adds, then providing a link to a blog entry he wrote about the issue at

"At the maximum quality setting, 500 minutes would equate to about 330MB in each direction - not enough to get on anyone's radar screen," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member DMS1.

Then roscopco, who is one of our most frequent posters here on the Vonage Forum, adds this:

"My Internet provider allows me 60 gigs of total use that is up and down. I also have access to my account to see how much I have downloaded/uploaded for the month. I read your Blog that you had posted and either you have been using bit torrents or someone has hacked your system, but you are using WPA encryption so I highly doubt that. There is no way that you have used that much by using Vonage. I would check out your comcast page and see if there is a link to see your bandwidth usage."

Setting up Remote Desktop through a VT2542 is both the subject of, and the title of, a new Vonage Forum thread that has been launched by Vonage Forum Member Traderj.

"Does anybody have a good explanation of how to set up port forwarding in the VT2542?," Traderj writes. "I have set up port forwarding before but not in this device and I must admit I don't fully get what they want..and the help files and manual were next to useless...

"What do they mean by Source IP?," he continues. Is that my external or ISP based IP? I assume destination IP is my internal machine's IP. Plus I know what the start and end IP range is.. but what is the "destination port map?" Plus.. source netmask? Sorry I've set up a lot of port forwarding in my time and never seen any of these settings requested or used..."

Now here comes Darrell_G with the answer.

"In the Source IP address field put in "" without the quotes. Destination IP address field should be "" without the quotes. Destination Port Map will be the same as the Destination Port Start and Destination Port End. If the DPS and DPE for example is 3389, the DPM will be 3389. Source Netmask is"

Vonage Stock Report
