Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 21 - 23, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 21, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we'll check in on some Vonage news. Then, we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a firewall issue, and other  has to do with the Vonage Starcom F1000 phone. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Tenth In Online Ad Spending

According to The Nielsen Company, Vonage ranked tenth in online ad spending in the first half of this year. That's actually a dip from previously measured periods, when Vonage ranked in the top three.

The top ten online ad spenders from January through June 2007 were Experian Group Limited, NexTag, InterActiveCorp, Low Rate Source, AT&T, Verizon, Netflix, Countrywide Financial, Monster Worldwide and Vonage. Together, those advertisers plunked down about $5.2 billion in Web ads during the first half of the year. Nielsen did not provide the total amount spent in dollars across media or online only.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Astaro V7 and RT31p2 is a new thread started by jim999.

Jim999 writes:

"I am unable to get Vonage to work behind the Astaro Security Gateway version 7. I found the following directions on the forums but was unable to get them to work. Every time I create a network definition for the Vonage device, the ip address field blinks red. Any IP address that I attempt to assign to the RT31P2 is not accepted. Has anyone been able to make Vonage work behind the Astaro Gateway?

Assign Vonage device a static IP address on your network. Create a network definition for the Vonage device. Then create a service definition for Voip (thats what we named it) UDP source port 10000:20000 and then destination port 10000:20000

Then you need a NAT rule to forward Voip to your Vonage from the internet address to the Vonage device with Voip service. Then you have to have 2 packet filter rules. First rule from Vonage - service Any - destination Any (I set mine to high priority). The second rule is source Any - service Voip - destination Vonage (I set mine to high priority).

The post gets a reaction from fellow Vonage Forum Member va3mw.

"I carefully read what you wrote above, and it looks like your packet rule ANY in to ANY might open up your entire firewall to traffic," he writes. "From what I can see, don't I need to open the following: Any to 69 UDP Any to 5060:5061 UDP Any to 10000:20000 UDP I'm just up my V7 Home gateway and haven't managed to get a dial tone yet."

New Vonage Forum Member kdot decides to open a new Vonage Forum thread and give it the name of, how to buy new F1000?

"My wifi UTStarcom F1000 phone broke yesterday, but I can't find a new one. When I call Vonage, they tell me that I have to buy one from a retailer or open a new phone line with them. I can't find a retailer that carries the F1000 for sale that won't require me to set up an account with them. And it's not clear that the F1000's I'm finding on eBay, etc. are actually Vonage compatible," kdot writes.

"I don't understand why Vonage won't sell me a new one," kdot adds. "What's the point in having an account with them if I don't have a phone that I can use with it! Does anyone know WHY they won't sell me a new one or somewhere else I can buy a wifi phone that is compatible with Vonage that doesn't require a soft phone account?"

And howiewifi, a Vonage Forum Member who comments frequently on WiFi issues, answers by writing this:

"The only WiFi phones that work with Vonage primary accounts are Vonage branded," howiewifi writes. "You MAY be able to get one of those on eBay (subject to all the cautions of buying Vonage devices on eBay and getting Vonage to accept them). Other than that, the only place to get one is from Vonage directly, since they never put these into retail stores."

New Vonage Forum Member ran13 posts this:

"I was told by customer service that it was simple a matter of adding the MAC address after logging into the website. Now I am finding out that buying US Starcom F1000 phone retail online gets 'not compatible with Vonage' notice. It was explained to me by at vonage customer service that right now this was your best option considering that they are all sold out of this phone.

"I do not mean any offence but that's kind of shady that you have to go and possibly spend between 100 to 200 dollars for a phone that 'maybe' will be compatible with vonage, even when this is the one they recommend. There simply going to have to get on the ball and get new phones (since it seems to be in high demand). Or expand the variety of phones so you can get a phone and it does not have to be 'Vonage branded'.

And then I see that howiewifi has followed this up with a new post.

"With the F1000 or with any other device - putting the MAC in on the Vonage web site works because the MAC is listed in Vonage's database and they have the unique passwords for each device that they got from the manufacturer," howiewifi writes. "If you buy a device that is NOT Vonage branded, then the MAC will not be in the Vonage database and they will not be able to do anything with it on a primary account - only on a soft phone account. If Vonage allowed you to "Bring Your Own Device", that would be a different case.

"Customer service may have misinterpreted what you asked but it is very clear that if a device is not branded Vonage (and locked to Vonage), then it is not 'compatible' with a primary Vonage account," he writes. "On the other hand, pretty much 'any' SIP based device should be fine with a Vonage soft phone account."

Vonage Stock Report

Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.01 a share, up three cents (+.52%)  from Thursday's $1.98 a share close but then again, that closing price was five cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.96 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on today ended up as reaching 659,100  shares.
