Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 20, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

It's a light Vonage news day today, so on account of that we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, the first one being about problems accessing the Internet when talking over a Vonage connection, and the other one has to do with a wiring-related issue. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Can hear my phone but not able to surf internet is a new Vonage Forum thread which is started up and named by Vonage Forum Member trixie.

After writing that Vonage service has been working well at home, trixie wrote:

"I had to bring this system into my workplace. I hooked the business internet connection into the Vonage router which is a linksys WRTP54G, then the appropriate cable to the back of my computer. The phone works great, but I am unable to surf the internet. Any ideas on why and what I can do to fix this?"

Responses have come in from Vonage Forum Members tglea and Blackjack.

"How was you computer at work accessing the internet before?," asks tglea. "Did you replace a router with your Linksys? How big of a business are you talking about? How many other computers, internet users and pieces of networking equipment in your office? Do you have DSL or Cable at your home? What about your office? The fix is probably pretty easy but we would need more information."

"Open up a command prompt and type ipconfig -all," Blackjack suggests. "Check to see if DHCP is enabled, and if so, find the default gateway (should be your Vonage adapter's LAN IP). Type ping and also ping

"Let us know exactly what you get."

This thread is ongoing.

Now, in honor of the 4,000th post being made on the Vonage Hard-Wiring Installation Forum section of our Vonage Forum earlier today, let's look at a post from there.

Hard wiring with pre-wired construction is a thread started by Vonage Forum Member dolfan3033.

"I have a little problem and was wondering if one of you could possibly give me some advice," writes dolfan3033.

"I recently moved into a newly constructed house that was pre-wired for phone service," he adds. Being that I never signed up for phone service via a landline (Because of Vonage) I don't have a NIS on the outside of my house. I have a blue wire coming out of the outside wall that's connected to nothing (see picture). When I plug my Vonage adapter into a jack in a room, the phone works for a period of time before I hear crackling and an occasional busy signal. It seems like there is some kind of interference in the phone line. The phone works perfectly when directly connected to the phone adapter.

"Here's my theory," states dolfan3033. "When I plug a phone into the jack when it's not connected to Vonage, I don't hear any interference... no sound whatsoever (as I would assume because I am not connected to the phone company and don't even have a NIS) The blue insulation surrounding the wire on the outside bundles the individual phone wires closely together. Could these wires my touching causing the interference? Should I pull back the end of the blue insulation and wrap each individual wire with electrical tape to prevent contact?"

Answers come from fellow Vonage Forum Members Steve48, tglea and Blackjack. Let's take them in turn.

"Yes!! That may not be the problem, but you've nailed the first step perfectly," writes Steve48.

"You could also go to the home run point in your house and simply disconnect the wire that travels outside from the rest of your inside wire runs," writes tglea. "You should have a punchdown block and it should be fairly obvious which line is coming from outside. If they are all twisted together, you could still remove the outside run and rework the rest of the wires to make sure they are all making good contact with each other."

"Getting a busy signal means you have a short somewhere in the wiring," he adds. "As you have that cable hanging out in mid air I would really suggest checking that out first."
