Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Because it is a slow news day today, we'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage SimulRing, and the other is about equipment recommendations for Uninterruptible Power Supply to work with a Vonage account. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

Call Forwarding and SimulRing is a Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member roscopco

"I don't want to call forward my calls, but I want it to SimulRing another number," roscopco writes. "I notice on the vonage access page that there is a tab for Call forwarding and one for Simulring. Is there an actual way for me just to SimulRing and not call forward? 

"Since my Vonage Talk isn't accepting calls I want to SimulRing my free incoming number on my computer's soft phone."

First, fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G responds, "Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the two go hand-in-hand...You can't have one without the other."

"Short answer: YES!," replies tmbeem. "Just type in the 11 digit number (1+area code+number) in the SimulRing tab and click "Enable" and you should see a message stating it went into effect. Call Forwarding and SimulRing may be grouped together but they are two separate features. I hope this helps."

These responses draw another post from roscopco.

"I did just put it in the SimulRing box and clicked enable, but when my sister called me using V-Me both numbers rang, and when I answered my Vonage line the other number kept ringing and she couldn't hear me," he writes in follow-up. She tried again and I answered the non-vonage phone and she couldn't hear me."

"I haven't tried it without the V-Me feature."

Then, fellow Vonage Forum Member Nautica writes about this issue based on his own experiences.

"I have SimulRing configured without the Call Forward and it works fine. I also have Vonage do my voicemail instead of my home answering machine. But there is a nuance I have discovered with SimulRing," he writes.

"For example: I have my cell phone set to ring SimulRing with my Vonage phone," he adds. "If I have my cell phone SHUT OFF, then my home phone will only ring once.

"Then I lose the call. I don't know what happens to the caller or if it goes to voice mail, but I have noticed at the end of the day when I have my cell phone shut off I have no Vonage voicemail.," he adds.

"During my job I have my cell phone shut off," he continues. "This becomes a problem when I return home and find no Vonage messages. So for now, I have my cell phone set to silent or vibrate and the whole gig works well. My home phone will ring 6 times and go to voicemail."

And then gadgetfan added the following this afternoon:

"At the end of the day, do you have voicemail on your cellphone?," gadgetfan writes. "This sounds like SimulRing is working exactly as intended. An incoming call rings both your Vonage line and your cellphone, except your cellphone is turned off. Presumably, when your cellphone is off, calls to the cellphone go directly to your cellphone voicemail. 

"In this case, your incoming calls are likely being picked up on the first ring by your cellphone's voicemail," adds gadgetfan. "The Vonage line isn't ringing long enough to trigger a pickup by Vonage voicemail."

Like just about every other Vonage user, Vonage Forum Member begotus would not want his electrical power to go out during a storm, or come back so much after a storm that it would mess up his computer. He would like recommendations on a Uninterruptible Power Supply. He even starts a Vonage Forum thread on the subject which he has entitled, Recommendations for 24-hr uninterruptible modem power supply.

"I would like to have phone service when the power goes out," begotus writes. "I assume anyone connecting a Vonage line to their alarm system would want the same. Are there any recommendations for an uninterruptible power supply to power a cable modem, Voip modem, and maybe one cordless phone for up to 24 hours?"

This thread, post and question draws an answer from Steve48, our most frequent poster here on the Vonage Forum.

Steve48 offers these pointers:

"I don't have a specific recommendation, but I suspect that many UPSs should come close with a light load. On any specific UPS, look at its wattage rating and read the spec on how long the manufacturer claims it will work at full power. Multiple the wattage and the time and you'll have its capacity. Add up the wattage of the devices you want to power and divide that into the capacity you calculated. The result is the approximate time that the unit will work.

Good idea, by the way. I use a dedicated UPS for my modem and Vonage router, but I chose the UPS on the basis of how much I was willing to pay. It's an APC ES 350VA. It will give me about 1/2 hour at 200 watts, and my units together draw about 20 watts, so I expect to get about 5 hours of run time."


Vonage Stock Report

Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.05 a share, up a full 11 cents (+5.67%)  from Monday's $1.94 a share close but then again, that closing price was 12 cents higher than today's lowest Vonage stock price and that was $1.93 a share. Total Vonage shares traded today finalized at 1,513,200  shares.
