Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 13, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let's check in on some Vonage news. Then we'll go to two Vonage Forum threads, one about the availability of a Vonage-compatible phone with a messaging waiting light, and another thread, that one about caller ID and bandwidth. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Blog Posts Photos of New Vonage Router

This news is interesting enough that I am repeating it from yesterday's edition of the Vonage Forum Digest.

On the CrunchGear blog, they have posted up photos of a new but unreleased Vonage router, the VDV21.

"You like to make phone calls? This little black box will let you make phone calls," writes John Biggs who writes for the site. Our tipster writes:

I just received one of the new Vonage VDV21 boxes. The package was pretty nice and it is about a 2 min process to get setup. I will let you know how this thing works - only downside so far is you need to get a new Vonage number to do the beta, you can’t use your existing #. "

"This is the first Voip router with an LCD for call logs and voicemail information," adds John Biggs. "It might be overkill but it does look cool."

The article is linked here.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member MikeO has opened a new Vonage Forum thread and has named it, Does a multi-line phone exist with Message Waiting light?

He writes:

"Looking for a 2-4 line phone for our home office. The phone system can either have its own Router and/or Telephone Adapter built-in, or could be plugged into a Telephone Adapter such as the Motorola, Linksys or D-Link products. The system would NOT have a Digital Answering System, as we'd like to use the Vonage voicemail system. Ideally, it would have a Message Waiting indicator for Vonage voicemail messages. We'd like at least 4 cordless handsets and either a corded or cordless base station, all with good quality built-in speakerphones.

The handsets should be 5.8GHz so not to interfere with a 802.11g network. The handsets must be able to answer multiple lines. The closest product to meeting our needs that we've seen is the Uniden UIP1869V. The only problem (to my knowledge based on other posts) is that the base and handsets only answer Line 1.

A separate but related desire is to find a Router that supports QoS to prioritize Voip traffic for greater voice quality (but that could be a post of its own)."

MikeO's post draws interest from Vonage Forum Member KevinH:

"I don't have a specific model in mind. I DO have VTech 2.4 Ghz 2 line, cordless set, 3 remotes, 1 base w/ speakerphone exactly matching your requirements except for the fact that it is 2.4 GHz," KevinH writes. "I am fairly sure they now offer sets in the 5.8 GHz range. I am very happy with their quality."

And then we have this from Vonage Forum Member sdegonge:

"I'm using a Uniden TCX905 handset and compatible base unit," he writes. "I have 2 lines with voicemail indicator. This phone has been great - lots of features. Have had it for a year and no problems."

Those answers bring this follow-up post from MikeO, who as I noted, started this thread:

"KevinH, sdegonge, Thanks for the replies. I'll check those out. Now that I have installed my first telephone adapter (a VT2142) and plugged in my existing AT&T phone base with cordless handsets, it turns out that they display a message waiting message on the screen. That's cool. I thought that phones had to be setup specifically for Vonage for that to work, but I guess it works the same way as if you subscribed to a Telco-provided voicemail service... I'll still look for the multi-line phones though. I'll post another message once I decide on something."

New Vonage Forum Member DarrinG starts a new Vonage Forum thread which he has named, Is there a way to dedicate bandwidth.

"Well I joined Vonage after I got a job out of town and needed a way to communicate with the family back home.," DarrinG writes. "Now I have some questions.

"Is there a way to dedicate bandwidth to my Vonage?," he asks. "I only have the basic box connected to my router. Now when my wife comes up for a visit while I'm working I can't call my Vonage number from work. I can make a long distance call to anywhere in the world but for some reason I can't call my number?

"Also is there a way to get the caller ID to work on our own," DarrinG also asks. "I've seen that some people are having problems has anyone been able to fix this?"

Frequent Vonage Forum poster roscopco answers by writing:

"You can port forward the ports, but if you aren't doing any large downloading while talking this shouldn't be an issue.

What error are you getting when you call your Vonage number from work?

Vonage doesn't control the incoming caller ID, for incoming I usually get both the name and number. When you call someone else, only your number will show unless they have you in their phone directory."

Vonage Stock Report

Just after 12 Noon EDT today, Vonage stock was at $2.06 a share, down slightly from yesterday's $2.07 a share. We'll catch up with more Vonage stock pricing info in tomorrow's edition.
