Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let's check in on some Vonage news. Next, we'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about calls dropping after 30 seconds, and another thread that's about issues relating t buying additional Vonage equipment to what's already running on a user's Vonage set-up. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.



In The News

Vonage Workaround In Place For 92 Percent Of Customers

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Vonage spokesman Charles Sahner said the company is hopeful it will win its patent case against Verizon on appeal, avoiding the need to pay damages and past and new licensing fees. But even if the company loses, it has a workaround in place that's up and running.

The workaround, which Sahner said does not infringe on Verizon's patents, was installed this summer and is in place for 92 percent of its customers. Another 8 percent of the customers who connect through wireless continue to use disputed technology but Sahner said a workaround is also ready to go for those customers as well, should Vonage lose its case.

"This pulls the rug out from under Verizon," said Sahner. "No matter what happens we're not using their technology any more."

The article further explains that Vonage is hoping they can win based on a ruling earlier this year from the U.S. Supreme Court, which states that patents are potentially not valid if the technology or invention is obvious or ordinary.

Calls drop after 30 seconds--Linksys WRTP54g and cable modem is a new Vonage Forum thread began by new Vonage Forum Member with the user name, newtothis.

He writes:

"I'm using a cable modem (Motorola Surfboard) with a Linksys WRTP54G wireless router attached and am having trouble with dropped calls--the line drops after an average of 30 seconds. Longest I've gone is 8 min before unexpected call drop; however, there is sometimes no dial tone or line drops even before I've finished dialing. I have tried this with both a wired phone and a cordless (5.8) phone plugged into the Phone 1 port, and it happened with both.

Internet seems to be working fine as far as I can tell (pages are loading, etc.) "

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G reads this info and offers this advice:

"Excessive jitter (357.6ms) is what's causing your calls to drop. Jitter is defined as follows, "the variation in time between data packets sent and packets arriving caused by network difficulties such as route changes, congestion, packet loss, traffic regulators etc., and plays a major role in the quality of a Voip call. Excessive jitter occurs when the time delay is too long (high latency) and packets arrive outside the time window and get lost from the call (discarded). As a result, the recomposed sound no longer reflects exactly what was sent, and depending of the extent of the delay may not be understandable by the recipient."

Even though your internet appears to be working, excessive latency will affect voice quality with VoIP. Remove your WRTP54G from your setup and connect your cable modem directly to your PC and re-run the Voip speed test. This will help to determine if it's the Vonage device that's causing the excessive jitter or your internet connection itself. It's a good idea to use more than one test site so you can compare your results. Buying a Back-up Box is a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member smiller.

And smiller starts this thread by writing:

"I live in Mexico and do not have easy access to a new VT-2442 should this one suddenly go bad. I'll be in The States soon and was considering buying a second box just in case. I have seen several new ones for sale on eBay.

I know very little about tech type issues, so my question is if I bought a second Vonage box and then for some reason had to use it, how would I get it routed into the Vonage system? Do they do all of that via telephone if and when it is needed, or is there more to it than that?"

One answer comes from roscopco, who writes,:

Just go to a store and buy one. I seen one at Target on clearance. I bought a Linksys wireless Vonage box cheap here in Canada. I called Vonage and had it added to my account and now I can switch boxes via the Vonage page. I would stay away from a used one."

That engenders a follow-up question from smiller:

"My next question was going to be about buying a "new" used box," he writes. So I can have a second box with the same #, correct? "What is the charge for that?"

That question brings fellow Vonage Forum Member tglea into this thread.

"You can also add another device from the website, so if you don't have any problems, you can do it without even talking with CS. Then, as roscopco said, you can also switch your number between devices as you wish," tglea writes.

"The general rule seems to be it's not a good idea to buy from eBay, specially if the ATA is used," he adds. "Although, if the seller has good feedback and lists the device as brand new or never used, I don't see the problem with that. The consensus of this forum is that Vonage doesn't like to reactivate used ATAs on new accounts."

Then tglea quickly follows up with another post:

"You can switch your number back and forth between the devices as you wish," adds tglea. However, you can't have the same number active on two devices at the same time. There is no charge to switch the numbers between devices
 

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage's stock price closed at $2.01 a share. That was a decrease of two cents (-0.99 %) from Friday  when on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.03 a share, but then again that closing price was one cent higher than the day's closing price of $2.00 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on today reached up to 685,200 shares.
