Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 7 - 9, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 7, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let's catch up on some Vonage news. Then we'll go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about a bandwidth issue, and the other concerns a user who is having a problem with his Vonage adapter and would like to swap it out.  Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Web Site Praised For Its Service Capabilities

Information Week reports on a study of telecom carrier web pages conducted by online services provider Brulant.

Vonage came out pretty well in the study- which actually was kind of critical.

The study found that 69% of home pages don't allow customers to log in to their account. Nearly 40% of home pages don't have "site search" functionality and only 38% offer a "help" link.

Carriers studied included most of the traditional U.S. based landline and cell phone companies, as well as Internet phone companies such as Vonage and Skype.

"Out of the carriers discussed, Sprint and Vonage scored the highest in various categories," writes Information Week's Elena Malykhina.  "Both offer services on their home pages, such as account sign-in, a customer service link, and site search.

Citron To Speak At Conference Next Monday

Vonage says  that its Chairman and Chief Strategist, Jeffrey A. Citron, will speak at the Jefferies 5th Annual Communications Conference on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 1:50 PM ET. The event will be held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City.

The presentation will be webcast live through Vonage's Investor Relations website at http://ir.vonage.com. Windows Media Player or RealPlayer is required to listen to this webcast. A replay will be available shortly after the live webcast and will be accessible for two weeks.

Has Vonage changed their CODEC's??? Calls sound muffled now is both a question and the title of a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member Mr_Sorento.

I'm still on the RTP300 and for the past 2 years, my Bandwidth saver has been set to 90kbs (the highest)," Mr_Sorento writes. "From the very beginning and all this time, our voice quality on all our calls has been the same as or even better than a POTS landline. Now, all of a sudden, our voice sounds like we've been set to the 30kbs or 50kbs setting - it sounds all muffled and like it's all digitized or something.

"I checked my bandwidth saver settings on my account online and it still says it's set to the highest (90kbs)," he explains further. Is it possible that our CODEC has been changed to a lower setting, but the web still shows the higher setting? Furthermore, is it possible that because of the lawsuit with Verizon that Vonage has changed over to some new CODECs that aren't as good as what they've had all this time?

"Has anyone else noticed what I'm referring to or is it just me (like it seems to be a lot lately)?," Mr_Sorento adds.

After receiving a reply response post from fellow Vonage Forum Member houuser saying he's noticed no change of that type, Mr_Sorento comes back with a follow-up post mentioning what's he's found out about this issue.

Mr_Sorento writes:

"Well, I took a chance and the other night, logged into my Vonage account online and changed my Bandwidth Saver setting from High to Medium and then back to High to force a CODEC reset on my RTP300. After performing this action, my calls are crystal clear and sound the same as or better than a regular landline.

"It appears that someone at Vonage changed my CODEC setting to a lower setting internally on my RTP300 without changing the setting on the Vonage website, thus giving you the false impression you were still set at the High Quality setting.

"Just passing this info on to help anyone else who may go through the same kind of problem in the future."

Thanks for that info, Mr_Sorento.

Next I am going to write about a thread that new Vonage Forum Member rkbabang is calling, Replace my phone adapter?

"I'm having a problem with my phone adapter, if I were to buy a used Linksys PAP2 that was previously used on Vonage by someone else would it be possible to activate it to my existing Vonage account? Is this something I could do myself or would it require a call to Vonage?," rkbabang writes to open his thread.

And then rkbabang gets expert advice from our most frequent poster. That would be Steve48.

"It would probably require a call to Vonage," Steve48 writes. "They tend to be sticky about re-activating used adapters. It may also require a call from the previous user.

"The biggest problem will be if the previous user has an outstanding balance with Vonage," Steve48 adds.

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.03 a share, a dip of 8 cents (-3.79%) from Thursday's closing price of  $2.11 a share, but then again that closing price was 1 cent more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.02 a share. Total shares traded on today got up to reach 550,300 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
