Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 29, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read what The Motley Fool says are the economic benefits of Vonage. Then let's go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage and Windows Vista, and the other about whether it is possible to use a credit card swiper with Vonage. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Motley Fool Says You Can Save Money With Vonage

The financial news and advice site Motley Fool endorses Vonage as a way for consumers to save money.

"Better still, if you have broadband check out one of the many internet (VOIP) call providers such as Skype or Vonage and make calls from your PC for free," writes The Motley Fool's Alison Hunt. "And speaking of broadband, you could find switching supplier could save you a packet. That said, don't be a slave to broadband. If you barely use it, could you save by canceling the contract and simply using the connection at work?"

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Vonage Forum Member artbytes2 starts a Vonage Forum thread that is named, Vonage Talk and Windows Vista.

"Does anyone know if Vonage Talk Alpha works with Windows Vista? I need to know before I purchase my new laptop," artbytes2 asks.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member roscopco replies by asking:

"I have heard conflicting reports on this. On another forum one person says it works and another says it doesn't. I use the program, but I don't have Vista running. If you don't find the answer here, you might have to call Vonage themselves."

This thread then draws the interest of fellow Vonage Forum Member kumakuma, who writes:

"Do you mean the VPhone?..if it is, then yes it works great with ultimate, but for other version there is a problem, you need to setup the compatibility mode of your PC. here is the step:

1.)open the removable disk drive. that's your VPhone).expect that you will not see anything.
2.)create a shortcut on your desktop.(lets use E as a drive of your VPhone).
-So it will be E:vonageautodown.exe
-click next
-then type Vonage Talk (or anything you prefer)
-click finish
3.)right click on the shortcut you made.
4.)click properties
5.)click compatibility tab. And set compatibility to run with windows service pack 2.And click on RUN AS AN ADMINISTRATOR
6.)click on the general tab. And click on read only. And click OK
7.)double click on the shortcut. And your good to go.

but if you shutdown or restart your PC all the settings you made will be restarted, but the shortcut you made is still there"

A clarification is then provided by artbytes2:

"Thanks for the replies. I did mean the separate software named Vonage Talk, but I have a V-Phone, too. I'll need that information, as well.

Cross your fingers that all goes well with the new laptop for the trip. I don't have much time to play around.

About the V-Phone. I bought a V-phone at Radio Shack and called Vonage to set up my account on Sunday. Although my account says it's active, they have never sent me the email to tell me they have mapped the phone number to the mac address of the v-phone. When I plug in the v-phone the dial pad still does not appear. I've read that happens until Vonage has finished setting up your account.

I haven't even really gotten to test my v-phone, yet. I've been plugging it into Windows XP computers periodically to see if it's working, yet, but nothing.

Sometimes the Vonage Talk will work, though. At other times it can't seem to connect to the network."

Darrell_G, another Vonage Forum Member then offers this input:

"Are you referring to the error message "Couldn't connect to host" with Vonage Talk? If so, ignore that error message...you can still make outbound calls."

It's artbytes2's turn once again.

"No, I have learned to ignore the "Can't connect to Host" message at the bottom. From the dial pad you can still click the phone icon and dial.l," artbytes2 writes.

"However, other times when I tried to connect, the phone icon remained grayed out," he adds. "Nothing much would happen at all, and I would finally get a "Network error" at top followed by the sign in screen again. Then I would attempt to sign in again, but the same thing would happen.

"Several hours later, it would work again. "Work" meaning that the phone icon was not grayed out and the I could dial out," artbytes2 points out.

Vonage Forum Member kumakuma is back, starting a thread that he's decided to entitle, can i connect a credit card swiper to my Vonage device.

"Can I connect my portable credit card swiper to my vonage device?," kumakuma asks. "My phone and internet is working fine.everything is good."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member howiewifi is the first to respond on this thread.

"I don't see why not as long as you have it programmed to dial 1 and area code," adds mundy5. "It's probably similar to people using a dial up fax/modem on their computer. I have had to lower the baud rate to 9600 and it works fine. So I think if you have that kind of customization available for your credit card swiper, it theoretically should work without issue. Again, I haven't seen this kind of question before so only actual implementation will tell you. It's a phone call to Vonage whether it's automated or a live voice.

"Report back to us after you try it. It'll be useful information for others."

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.13 a share, a drop of  2 cents (-0.93%) from Monday's closing price of  $2.15 a share, but then again that closing price was 7 cents more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.06 a share. Total shares traded on Wednesday resulted as 684,900 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
