Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 30, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First we'll catch up on some Vonage news. Then let's go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about the availability of the Vonage Starcom WiFi phone, and the other is about router recommendations. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Sponsors Notre Dame Football Pre-Game Show

The financial news and advice site Motley Fool endorses Vonage as a way for consumers to save money.

This coming Labor Day weekend is the traditional start to U.S. football, both pro and college. And Vonage has a hand in that.

NBC Sports kicks off its 17th season as the exclusive broadcaster of Notre Dame football home games this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET live in high definition as the Fighting Irish open their home slate against Georgia Tech at Notre Dame Stadium. Coverage begins on at 3 p.m. ET with the "Vonage Notre Dame Countdown to Kickoff"

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Vonage Forum Member cargojack fires up a new Vonage Forum thread that he calls, Wifi Phone - Starcom.

"Have any of you noticed that for awhile, Vonage was only selling a refurbished Starcom WiFi phone from their website. Now, they are no longer selling any sort of Wifi phone," he writes. "Either it means they are going to remove a WiFi phone from their line up, they are gearing up to introduce a new version of the phone, or they just ran out of stock. Does anyone know anything more about that?"

A reply is offered by fellow Vonage Forum Member tophtml.

"Maybe they're going to the F3000," tophtml writes. "I have also heard of a combination cell phone which will hook up with a wireless AP when in range and go on the cellular system when not in range."

Started by hanspl, the new Vonage Forum thread Which new routers to get is yet another example of the fact that we get lots of equipment recommendation threads here.

"I am using RTP300 Voip routers for two computers and three phone lines," hanspl writes. "One of the routers is acting up (phone 1 and 2 lights comes on only after prolonged "tweaking", and I do not know what I did to get it to work). And since the RTP300 are now somewhat dated, I want to get two new VoIP routers (since there are no three phone line routers out there yet, as far as I know) for hard-wiring (my wife's and my office are wall to wall, so I see no reason to go wireless).

"I would be very grateful to get some tips on what routers to start looking at, and also info (if available) on whether routers have been tested somewhere," he adds.

Our most frequent poster Steve48 offers input in two separate follow-up posts on this thread.

He writes in part that if he was "willing to replace two adapter/routers I'd probably opt to go the whole route and get a good stand alone router and stand alone adapters. Having listened to the networking guys, I'd go with a WRT54GL for the main router and put firmware from Tomato on it. Then I'd go with D-link VTAs for the Vonage adapters."

Then, Steve48 follows up some more questions from hanspl by writing:

"Vonage will work only with adapters specifically configured for Vonage use. I suspect that other Voip providers are the same, but this applies equally to all adapters. Figure on canning any adapters you have if you switch. Of course, that's more reason to keep adapters simple and use dedicated routers for that function."

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.10 a share, a drop of  3 cents (-1.41%) from Wednesday's closing price of  $2.13 a share, but then again that closing price was 2 cents more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.08 a share. Total shares traded on Thursday came out as 563,100 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us this coming Tuesday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
