Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 27, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, some good news. Earlier this afternoon, we received our 44 millionth page view since we started the Vonage Forum all the way back in March, 2003. Every time you click on a Vonage Forum web page, that's another page view. So let's just see how fast we can get to 45 million PVs!

First, we'll catch up on some Vonage news. Then we'll go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about a router, and the other about an adapter used with Vonage service. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Financial Site Profiles Key Vonage Supplier

The financial news and analysis website Blogging Stocks has an interesting profile of a Los Angeles-based company called PeopleSupport.

You might be wondering what PeopleSupport has to do with Vonage. Fair question.

"More and more businesses are finding that it can pay to outsource their telephone and Internet customer interface requirements to firms set up to efficiently handle such functions," writes Larry Schutts. "One such outfit is headquartered in Los Angeles, but operates from shops overseas.

"PeopleSupport provides business process outsourcing (BPO) services from facilities in the Philippines," he points out. "Company personnel handle customer service calls, technical support questions, marketing campaigns and collections. The firm also transcribes voice recordings and captions television content. Services are offered via telephone, e-mail and Web chat. Expedia  and Vonage Holdings  are major customers."

The rest of the article is an analysis of PeopleSupport's stock price. If you want to read the article, here's a link.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

A router-related Vonage Forum thread entitled linksys rt31p2 MAC to IP DHCP mapping has been established by Vonage Forum Member gchernis.

Writes gchernis, whose actual first name is Greg:

"I am trying to tell the DHCP component in my Vonage-provided Linksys router how to assign IP addresses on local network. For example, if I set up port forwarding for remote desktop to IP (my primary desktop), it will stop working when DHCP decides to re-assign the IP.

"On my other Linksys router I have a feature that allows to reserve IP addresses to certain specified MAC addresses in DHCP table. Is it possible on rt31p2?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman replied:

I don't think you can do this on the RT31P2 in the way you are describing, but here is an alternative.

Leave the router alone and just assign the PC you want to use RDP a static IP address, but assign the address on the PC, not the router.

If this is a windows machine just update the network connection and give it the address you want. Just pick one outside of the DHCP range the router is currently setup to give out so you don't have any conflicts.

Then just setup your port forwarding on the router using this address and you should be all set."

In a follow-up post, Greg  thanked butterman. By the way it is usually a good idea to do this. Your fellow Vonage Members are giving advice on their own time. Do unto others, you know...

Now it is on to another Vonage Forum thread and this one has been named, Vonage + Linksys bridge.

In her thread-starting post, Vonage Forum Member jphekman (first name Jessica), writes:

"I have a Motorola vt2442 Vonage adapter which I need to place a fair distance from my router, so I need it to connect to the network wirelessly. The current setup is:

Actiontec router -> Linksys WRE54G range expander -> Linksys WET54G bridge -> Motorola vt2442 Vonage adapter

The phone, when plugged in to the adapter, plays the message "this line is not provisioned for use; please try the other line." The adapter's internet light stays on solid, but its power light flashes. (Other devices have no trouble with that power outlet.)

When I plug my XP laptop into the WET54 bridge, it is able to get network connectivity with a static IP address, but it is not able to get an IP via DHCP. When I bring the bridge upstairs and plug it in to my XP desktop, the desktop is able to get an address by DHCP; go figure.

Clearly the Vonage adapter is failing to get an IP address, but I am not sure how to help it. Other people in this forum appear to have used a similar setup (this is where I found the recommendation to buy the WET54) -- I'd love some suggestions."

Once again it is butterman who offers a first suggestion. "I don't have experience with this type of setup, but you might want to start by giving the Vonage device a static IP address to see if this helps get around the problem," he writes.

Jessica replies by writing, "I think that might well solve the problem, but I don't know how to do so. To give my computers static IPs, I told the computers via their networking applications what their IPs were.

"Obviously that doesn't work with the Vonage adapter. Am I missing something?"

Back is butterman, spreading this advice:

"You should be able to give the router a static address through its web configuration utility.

Here is a link to the user guide the details how to do this.

"I would also temporarily connect the Vonage router to the Actiontec router so that you can log in to it and make the necessary changes. Once it is working against the Actiontec, I would then connect it to the wireless bridge. By doing this you will at least be sure that the Vonage device is setup properly with the static IP.

"The wireless bridge may cause other issues, but its not something I've never worked with so I don't have any suggestions on that part of the setup.

"Hope this helps."
