Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 24, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, we'll catch up on some Vonage news. Then we'll go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage service issues likely to be the fault of an Internet Service Provider, and the other about router issues one Vonage Forum Member is experiencing running Vonage through a Mac. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Files Counter-infringement Patent Claim Against Nortel reports Vonage is asking a Delaware court to invalidate patent infringement counterclaims being filed by telecommunications equipment maker Nortel Networks. T

Nortel filed the lawsuit as part of its amended response to a three-year-old legal action taken by Digital Packet Licensing (DPL) alleging patent infringement against Nortel. Vonage inherited DPL’s legal action against Nortel when it acquired DPL in June 2006. T

The DPL suit, which was filed in Texas, alleges infringement by Nortel of three patents that govern the compression of packetized digital signals commonly used in Voip technology. Nortel recently asked the Texas court to amend its response to include counterclaims of patent infringement against Vonage involving three Nortel patents. Vonage said that the Nortel patents, which govern aspects of phone data management, should not be part of Nortel’s response since they are unconnected to the original case.

"At this time, it is unclear if the District Court in Texas will allow Nortel to amend their original response," said Vonage spokesman Charles Sahner. "Vonage opposes any attempt by Nortel to amend its response in the Texas case as untimely and unrelated to the current action."

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread named VOIP problems? Change ISP if possible has been begun by Vonage Forum Member oldguy.

And then oldguy writes:

"I had Vonage in the early days a few years ago but gave it up because of recurring problems.

I signed up again a year ago and service was much improved but I still had recurring problems Vonage could not fix.

During a recent 2 week bout with choppy audio, static, and other problems I finally started looking at the Voip test results. My QOS was about 6% during the problem times even though my internet speed was great.

I called my ISP (Wideopenwest) several times to no avail and then inquired about Road Runner, which was previously not available from the other cable company as a stand alone product. Now it is available so I switched.

I have had the clearest, most problem free conversations since I have signed up for Vonage! QOS consistently measures at 98-99%!

Fellow Vonage Forum Member rgnok draws some conclusions in a follow-up post in which he writes:

"Thanks for the post and it just reinforces what a fair number of Vonage bashers are not willing to admit -- the quality of your Vonage experience depends on a lot of things, MANY of which are under Vonage's control, but many of which are completely beyond Vonage's control. And the nature of Voip is such that what seems like a great internet connection to a typical consumer user (always works, good speed, etc.) might have enough technical problems to make it less than ideal for voice.

Sometimes those sort of problems can be tweaked, sometimes they are just the way it is with some particular provider. Vonage customer service can often be lousy, but, the truth is, most Vonage "problems" are not really Vonage problems, as you can attest to first hand!"

Now let us go to this Vonage Forum thread entitled No Voip with WRT54GP2 on a Mac.

In writing a post to open this thread, Vonage Forum Member berlichman says:

"Wanting wireless, I'm trying to replace my Linksys RTP300 with Linksys WRT54GP2. Internet connection OK but no VoIP? Neither phone light is on. Vonage tech support got me up to the point where they needed Ethernet IP address which I couldn't find on my Mac with OS X. Got disconnected.

I now believe that Ethernet IP address on a Mac is called Ethernet ID and looks something like this: 00:17:f2:f3:fa:c2.

Be that as it may, has anyone had this problem of getting the WRT54GP2 working on a MacBook?"

An answer is supplied by fellow Vonage Forum Member Blackjack.

"Spoofing MAC Addresses is related to how modems dish out DHCP IP's, or some ISPs registering the MAC of the first network device plugged into the modem. so if you have Modem > Router > Computer and you CAN access the internet on the computer, the router is getting a WAN IP from the modem and you shouldn't need to spoof its MAC address," Blackjack writes. "Just power down modem and router, plug in the modem, wait 1-2 mins till it gets sync and the power up the router.

"If that does not work," Blackjack adds, "try resetting it back to factory defaults."

Vonage Stock Report

Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.19 a share, which as it turns out, was unchanged from Thursday's closing price of  $2.19 a share, but then again that closing price was four cents more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.15 a share. Total shares traded on Friday added up to being 403,600 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
