Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - August 23, 2007

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 23, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about recording Vonage calls and another thread that's about Vonage service interruptions one user is experiencing that could be caused by the weather. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Voip Call Recording is a new Vonage Forum thread which Vonage Forum Member Bloomguy30 opened.

"Just wondering if anyone knows if their is software available that can sniff voice traffic coming into the Vonage adapter and record a phone conversation to a PC hard drive?," he writes. "I want some software that I can install on a PC point it to the IP address of the Vonage adapter then when anyone calls it records the conversation to my PC."

Steve48 posted a reply, suggesting that Bloomguy30 go to: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic17782.html+voip.

Vonage Forum Member BOZE started a thread that is topical for this time of year. He has entitled the thread, Vonage router RT31P2 messed up after storm?

To kick off his thread, BOZE writes:

I live near Chicago and we had a bad storm about two hours ago, sadly  my cable modem goes down in fact it prolly did and just came back on before I got up and noticed the problem. my phone light is out, every other light is on and all three Ethernet port lights are lit up all though there is nothing plugged into one of them. I even reset it, unplugged it and plugged back in with no Ethernet cords plugged into it and all the Ethernet lights are still lit up green? my cable modem is fine cause right now it is directly hooked up to just my main computer so I could go online but the internet does not work through the Vonage router nor does the phone, any ideas?thanx

router model:linksys rtp132

Steve48 replied:

"It sounds like you've done the right things, and that the storm killed your RT. Before giving up on it, I'd do a master reset (using the button). Then plug a computer into the LAN side and see if you can access the admin page."

BOZE followed up by writing this:

"Finally got through to customer service and they had me do the series of resets which I already did) anyhow he determined it was defective, the nice thing is though they said it was out of warranty and a new one from them would cost around 150.00 dollars, then he talk to his supervisor and told me if I went to a retail store like best buy and bought one they would credit my account with 40.00 dollars since I've been a two year customer and always paid my bill on time and they have never had any issues with me, so I bought a linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G router and it only cost me 60 dollars so I'm only out 20 bucks, and it is MUCH better, the voice is clearer and between my two comps the speed is faster, so I guess it worked out. He also said he has never heard of all three Ethernet light being lit up green even when there is nothing plugged into them and its only just plugged into the wall, this is the second router I have fried from a storm, why does the router go and not the modem fried a Motorola router and now this one both after lightning storms, I just don't get it, the first thing that is hooked up is your cable modem then it hooks into your router, its like whatever makes it garbage just bypasses the modem and kills the router. I'd like to know how to prevent this from happening?

Then it was Steve48's turn. He replied,

"If you're using house wiring, it could be that the death stroke is entering on the phone lines, and not on the power wiring. "

BOZE follows up:

I'm not sure what you mean by house wiring, anyhow here is how I got my network setup.

"Cable from outside going into Comcast modem. Ethernet wire from Comcast modem plugged into wan port on linksys WRTP54G broadband router. One Ethernet cord plugged into my main computer in my bedroom.2nd Ethernet cord which is a 25 foot cord that I got buried under the carpet running across the room to other comp) is plugged in my second computer in the den. I also got a wireless smc USB adapter.

"Since my router is wireless would it be better to unplug the 25 foot cord I got going to my second computer and setting it up using this wireless USB adapter? I doubt that has to do with why I keep frying routers after storms but maybe it has something to do with the house wiring, like I said I do not know what that is so if you could please explain, also someone mentioned something about something being not grounded outside could be my problem, I don't know.

Hey guess what. Steve48's next:

"How are your phones set up? Do you just have one plugged directly into the Vonage box, or do you distribute the phone service to jacks around the house using telephone wiring in the wall?"

I think this thread will go on for awhile.
