Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 20, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Before we get to today's Digest, I'd like to announce that earlier today, our 43,000th Vonage Forum Member joined us. This Member's name is dashaund. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, dashaund! We look forward to reading your posts!

First, we'll look on what affect future Skype outages, such as they one they experienced, might have on Vonage. Then we'll go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage at DSL speeds, and the other seeking a headset recommendation for Vonage service. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Will Skype Service Outages Benefit Vonage?

You may have been aware that Skype suffered a nearly two-day outage. Now, at least one industry observer writes that Vonage could quite possibly benefit from any future outages Skype, which is owned by eBay, might experience.

Earlier today, Rick Aristotle Munarriz, a writer for the Motley Fool investment website, wrote in part:

"Despite its bit part in the company's financials, Skype is clearly important to eBay's growth strategy. That's where outages can have more dramatic effects. If future interruptions continue, users may flock to rival platforms, or turn to more conventional Internet telephony services like Vonage."

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

A new Vonage Forum Member with the user name Italian76 began a new thread that he decided to entitle, Vonage on 768 k DSL line. Is it worth it-

Italian76 writes:

"Will using Vonage on a Verizon DSL connection of 768 k have an effect on the calls such as lost calls poor call quality. I read is there a way to adjust the quality of a call on slower DSL connections. Is this true and how is it done?"

And wouldn't you know, he got two very helpful responses from two other Vonage Forum Members.

First, tglea writes:

"It all depends on the quality of your internet connection. 768kbps is your download, you need to find out what your upload speed is as well. The default settings are set to use 90kbps for call quality. You can easily change this to 50 or 30kbps in your online acct. Personally I use 30kbps all the time and have no problems. I would advise you to run the Voip speed test on this site and post all the information. That way, you can share the details here and get a better idea about how your internet connection is performing."

And then responding is rgnok. He writes:

"And for the record, 768 is not SLOW at all. Certainly there are faster connections out there, and, as tglea mentioned, the speed you are especially interested in is the UPLOAD speed, and 768 is probably your download speed (upload is USUALLY slower than download on residential and basic business connections). If you have 768 down, you probably have 256 or even 128 up. Either one is fast enough to give you great Vonage call quality BY ITSELF, but, again as tglea mentions, run some tests and see what kind of results you get, as the quality of your Vonage experience depends on a lot more than just speed.

"As far as speed alone, I used Vonage very happily for over a year with a wireless Internet connection with real world speeds of just about 500 down and 130 up. But, in addition to fast enough speed, I had low latency and good quality, and I used a good broadband router that allowed me to do some prioritizing (very simple to setup).

"All that said, yes, Vonage CAN be very "worth it", depending on what you have now for phone service, how you use it, and how much it is costing. Personally, I save about $20 per month, have more features, and quality that easily passes "the wife test".

You know, we often see Vonage Forum threads in which a Vonage Forum Member will seek a recommendation for equipment to work with the Vonage service. Such a thread is up today. It was started by andy831 who decided to entitle it, I need headset and office phone for my Vonage VoIP.

"Ok I am completely lost here," andy831 writes. "I need this ASAP for my office. Our office phones run off of Vonage VoIP. I  don't know anything about this stuff, but I want this Plantronics headset model : CS361N I dont even know if that's compatible with VoIP? I'm having a hard time finding a phone that is compatible with that headset . I was wondering if any office phone is compatible with Vonage VoIP? Thanks."

Jumping on the thread to offer his insight is fellow Vonage Forum Member spdickey.

"The Plantronics wireless headset plugs into a standard mini-phone jack on the side of most phones where the handset plugs into, the handset then plugs into the Plantronics headset transmitter," spdickey writes. "You can find complete instructions at http://www.headsetzone.com/cs361n.html

"This is not a Vonage issue, the issue is the plug on the handset of your phone," spdickey explains further. "If it does not have a removable cord, then the headset will not attach to the phone."

Vonage Stock Report

Today on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.09 a share, a drop of five cents (-2.34%) from Friday's closing price of  $2.14 a share, but then again the closing price today is three cents more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.07 a share. Total shares traded today added up to being 837,800 shares.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
