Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

Not a big news day today for Vonage so we'll go straight to two interesting Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage router firmware, and the other from a Vonage user who has been experiencing background noise on some Vonage calls. Finally, we'll check on Vonage's stock price.



On The Vonage VoIP Forum

New Vonage Forum Member choinga decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread that he's named, Going with the WRTG54GL...which Firmware Offers Best QoS??

He writes:

"I went from the RTP31 to the VT2542 and have been less than impressed with voice quality with either of those devices. The 2542 is even more of a pain in the ass because it won't hold the settings and every time it reboots it's back to the defaults which breaks all connectivity since my internal IP scheme doesn't match it's default and the wireless turns off.

I called Vonage this AM to attempt to return the 2542 but after spending 20 minutes on hold decided I'll call back late tonight when the wait times are shorter.

That said, I just bought a new WRTG54GL and am interested in folks opinions on which non-standard firmware folks are using and having the best experience with QoS? DD-WRT, Tomato, Hyper-WRT/Tofu, Sveasoft, etc...??

I'm also just going to buy one of the stand-alone devices (like PAP) to plug my phone into. Anyone have any recommendations there as well that create a good router/phone combo?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Blackjack sees choinga's post and replies by writing:

"I switched from DD-WRT to Tomato myself. DD-WRT offers a lot of eye candy which I never got round to using, while Tomato has a very clean interface and QoS rules are really very good the SVG bandwidth chart is also useful. Still, try both of them and see what suits your needs better. Just remember to reset the router after flashing different firmwares!

"As far as which adapter to pair with your GL, I believe all ATA's Vonage is currently offering are Texas Instruments. So they should theoretically have the same audio quality. I would go with a PAP2 version 2 as you don't seem to need NAT/Routing features. If you need more ports you could just get a VT2442 and use it as a switch / DHCP relay, although I wouldn't put my money on Vonage devices as networking equipment, better to get a cheapo switch instead. So all in all I would say PAP2 is the way to go."

It seems as though Vonage Forum Member analogkid12 has been experiencing some background noise on Vonage calls. I am sure that's why he then decided  to start up a Vonage Forum thread and he named it, Poor Audio Quality Background Noise.

"Having a constant background humming with my Vonage connection," he writes. " Must keep phone volume low to make call listenable on my end. Here is my set up and Voip test results

Summary
This report refers to a connection test carried out by IP address [hidden] on Aug 14, 2007 9:41:03 PM.

"Any suggestions on router settings, connections, anything to remove the annoying and constant background noise," analogkid12 then asked. "Vonage tech support blamed it on low upload bandwidth, yesterday I tested and received 99 KBPS, the test results above reference a Jitter problem that could cause line noise, not sure what that is...."

Two of analogkid12's fellow Vonage Forum Members have taken a stab at this issue.

"The background humming noise you are experiencing could be caused by one of your power adapters being plugged in to the wrong source; i.e. the power adapter for your cable modem may be plugged into the router instead of the cable modem," suggests Darrell_G. "Check to make sure that each power adapter is connected to it's corresponding device."

Then rebus- who like Darrell_G has more than 350 informative Vonage Forum posts, responds to analogkid12 as well:

Have you:

"1) Plugged the phone directly into the adapter to see if the humming goes away?

2) COMPLETELY disconnected the POTS service drop at the outside box?

Re. #2, if you still have the POTS line connected, then it's voltage from the POTS line causing the loud humming (even if you cancelled your POTS service-- voltage will still exist). This is not only annoying but will eventually destroy your Vonage adapter.

Re. #1, if you have already disconnected POTS completely, there is probably some voltage being induced into the phone wiring by a nearby source. You'll need to properly ground the wiring to bleed off that stray voltage. If you plug the phone directly into the adapter and the humming remains, then it's either a problem with the phone itself or the adapter. If the humming goes away, the house wiring is likely at fault."

Vonage Stock Report

Today  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $2.15 a share, a drop of three cents (-1.38%) over yesterday's closing price of  $2.18 a share, but then again the closing price today is six cents more than the day's lowest trading price for Vonage shares and that was $2.19 a share. Total shares traded today came out to be a total of 949,100 shares.
