On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member ChrisLewis starts off a thread that he calls, VT2542 installation behind Router.

I've just gotten my second Voip router for lines 3 and 4, and its a VT2542. What I have is Code: Internet->Old R-> Linksys Voip | +> VT2542 Voip Set it up similar to my Linksys, but for some reason, if I connect to the WiFi on it, it doesn't hand out a routeable IP address," ChrisLewis writes. "I can't ping IP of Router: Mask: LAN IP of Router: Mask:

"I've set up DHCP relay, but it doesn't seem to be working," he adds. And for some reason, whenever I try to change the IP of the LAN (to to put it on the same sub-net+gateway) I don't seem to be able to change it, and I get an error: SUBNETS ARE MATCHING so I'm quite confused. I haven't called Vonage yet, probably will today. I've looked at this thread on routing: and this thread on the VT2442"

NateHoy carefully reads all the details in ChrisLewis' post and responds with this input:

"OK, the way I see it, your Internet connection is handing out IP address, correct?

If that's the case, then you need to configure "Old R" to hand out addresses in a different range, which as I can see you have done. Your "Old R", if I am reading it correctly, is handing out 192.168.16.x addresses.

However, you CANNOT have 192.168.0.x ANYWHERE on your LAN, in any of the segments. Your connection to the Internet routes using that address, so if you try to make one of your segments use the same address, you will develop a circular route.

I'd pick different subnets for each of your routers, and accept the fact that each of them is going to be serving a different network and they are going to be unreachable from each other.

The assigned LAN addresses from your various connections should be as follows:

Internet = 192.168.0.x, you cannot change this, nor should you use it on your LAN.

Old R = 192.168.16.x, this works. The WAN addresses on the Linksys and VT2542 are going to be 192.168.16.x

VT2542 = set this to 192.168.15.x. Any devices connected to this (including on the WiFi) are going to be part of their own separate network. and cannot be accessed from computers connected to "Old R" or the Linksys if applicable.

Linksys = if this is a router, set it to 192.168.14.x - see note above on the VT2542 in terms of accessibility of other LAN segments.

If you want one segment with all of your routers, then you have several options:

1. Put the VT2542 out front, and use it as your primary router. Either decommission the "Old R" or use it for things you want on a "more secure" segment not accessible from the Wireless.

2. Retool the VT2542 and/or Linksys if applicable as a switch and wireless access point, by looking at Scenario Three in the article below:

3. Connect all of your clients to the VT2542, that way all of the clients are on the VT2542's network, wired and wireless (but almost all of your traffic is then going to be routed through the VT2542)."

And then fellow Vonage Forum Member kumakuma adds," you cannot use 192.168.0.X as you LAN IP, it is a reserved IP for the network domain. Your old router set the LAN IP to and your NEW router's LAN IP to this way they will have different networks."

Vonage Forum Member RonRN18 has been a Vonage user as well as a Vonage Forum Member for more than two years. But only recently has he experienced issues that leads him to open a new Vonage Forum thread with the title of, New problem with calls going to voicemail.

"I've been a Vonage user for several years now and have had nearly no problems," RonRN18 writes. "I have just recently starting having some bizarre problems. The phone rings... I answer it, I hear sound in the background, no one talks, then hangs up. As I put the telephone down, I see I have voicemail. This has happened about 5 times in the past week. I have a PAP2 as my phone adapter. I have a nearly perfect Internet connection with bi-directional 20Mbps bandwidth.

"As I've mentioned, this is new after several years of service," he emphasizes. Has anything changed on the side of Vonage? Anyone else have a similar issue?"

As in the first post I write about in today's Vonage Forum Digest, kumakuma contributes some pointers.

Try switching phone ports. Disable your voicemail thru your online acct. and check if there is still the problem," kumakuma writes. ."If not, there is a problem in your voicemail feature.

"Tech support can help you with that," he adds. "They might change your number."
