Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 2, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, let's catch up on promotions Vonage is currently offering. Then we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about an audio problem on Vonage calls, and the other xxxx. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Has Some Promotional Offers

On the TechRepublic website, blogger Lea Rush neatly summarizes some of Vonage's offers to former SunRocket subscribers, and also, their offers to other prospective new customers:

An improved incentive plan gives you and the new customer you refer a $50 AMEX gift card, and adds a two month free ride for your service as well," she writes. That’s a $150 marginal cost (overhead cost undermined) to pick up one typical residential customer. Their Refer-A-Friend has a tracking system which almost turns current customers into multi-level marketers.

"Vonage also offers SunRocket customers incentive to switch," adds Rush, "and added a cheery e-newsletter to subscribers, showing how other Vonage users solve problems

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member MrJoe starts a new thread that he's decided to name, Sucky audio, Awesome connection, wazzup?

Most of the first post he wrote to kick off the thread was a listing of his Vonage test results. Because one of the responses from other Vonage Forum Members comments specifically on his analysis of the test info MrJoe applied, I will include his test results here.

1. Location: Armada, MI
2. ISP name : Comcast
3. Upload and download speeds : I pay for 8mb down/ 1mb up but typically get higher speeds than that. Very rarely do I get lower speeds.
4. Modem make and model : Linksys RTP300
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 : N/A
6. Setup of Network ie Modem : ---->Vonage Adapter-->PC : Cable-->modem-->4-port switch-->A. RTP300 with Phone line and one laptop plugged into it and B. WRTP54G with 3 computers and a wireless laptop connected.
7. Issue : Often experiencing extreme lag (as much as 10-15 seconds at times) and extremely choppy outbound audio.
8. This test was taken while a phone call was active with normal network activity.
Normal network activity includes the occational web browsing on a couple of the computers that are connected to the WRTP54G, and the Laptop that is connected to the RTP300 is linked to an outside network through a VPN tunnel.

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 13392960 bps (13.4mb/s)
Upload speed: 2028976 bps (2mb/s)
Quality of service: 67 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 219 ms
Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 48 ms
Average round trip time to server: 97 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 3.6 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 518.0 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 34
Estimated MOS score: 3.6

After analyzing these results, fellow Vonage Forum Member rebus took a look at the result section that said,

2. ISP name : Comcast, Jitter: server --> you: 518.0 ms and then offered this opinion:

"My response is an over simplification, but I believe these are your 2 culprits. Jitter is excessive, and Comcast.... well... others here (and on dslreports.com) can tell you about how Comcast is (allegedly) degrading Voip service in what many believe is an attempt to frustrate you into buying the Comcast phone service instead. Thankfully I am NOT a Comcrap subscriber, so I'm only repeating what I've read/heard."

Then Darrell_G follows up with a request for MrJoe to run another test and provide more info.

"Remove all of your networking equipment and run the test again with only the pc connected to your cable modem then post your results," suggests Darrell_G.

Vonage Forum Member MoMadness entitled his new Vonage Forum thread, Can't reach 192.168.15.1 to connect Vtech IP8100.
