Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 1, 2007

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, a special announcement. Late last night, our Vonage Canada Forum section of the Vonage Forums received its 4,000th post. Because a good bit of the threads and posts are not specific to Vonage users in Canada, I can safely say you don't have to be Canadian to read, or even post on the Vonage Canada Forum. Here's the direct link to the Vonage Canada Forum.

First, let's catch up on promotions Vonage is currently offering. Then we'll go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about Vonage and cordless phones, and there's another thread about a Vonage-related router issue. Finally, we'll update Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Has Some Promotional Offers

On the TechRepublic website, blogger Lea Rush neatly summarizes some of Vonage's offers to former SunRocket subscribers, and also, their offers to other prospective new customers:

An improved incentive plan gives you and the new customer you refer a $50 AMEX gift card, and adds a two month free ride for your service as well," she writes. That’s a $150 marginal cost (overhead cost undermined) to pick up one typical residential customer. Their Refer-A-Friend has a tracking system which almost turns current customers into multi-level marketers.

"Vonage also offers SunRocket customers incentive to switch," adds Rush, "and added a cheery e-newsletter to subscribers, showing how other Vonage users solve problems

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage and cordless phones... is a new Vonage Forum thread started by Vonage Forum Member sternhowie.

"Thinking of making the switch but didn't get a very positive sounding 'Yes' on this question from the Vonage rep," sternhowie writes.

"I have the following

http://www.vtechphones.com/vtechui/store/dsp_product.cfm?itemID=1705

Will Vonage work on all 3 phones?"

Sternhowie gets plenty of answers. Let's run them down now.

Darrell_G writes:

"I use a VTech phone (i5871) with my Vonage service and it works just fine. The base unit of the i5871 is connected directly to the Vonage adapter (Motorola VT2542). In your case, just connect your base unit to the Vonage adapter and the satellite devices just need an electrical outlet to plug into and all should be good."

And then rgnok adds:

"Yes, just as Darrell said! You should not have any problem. I use a VTech set with base plus one extra handset; no problems, as only the base needs a phone connection!"

Navydavy2001 is in port:

"I had a GE Digital expandable set that worked just fine."

The most extensive answer, though, is offered by NateHoy, who writes:

"Absolutely. I have a VTech 6897 system and it works great with Vonage. Before that, I had an AT&T speakerphone with one cordless handset and that worked great, too.

My VTech system even recognizes the "voice mail waiting" signal from Vonage and flashes a signal on the screens of all of my phones and the base unit to let me know. I never use the built-in answering machine for the VTech, I prefer to use Vonage's voicemail. You'll want to check the manual on your phone, but there's a good chance your system will be able to detect Vonage's voicemail signal.

But, for basic telephone use, pretty much any phone you can plug into the plain old telephone system will work just fine with Vonage.

The only exceptions may be ones that require special adapters (really, REALLY old phones), or things like modems, FAX machines, TiVo, etc - and those should work pretty well if you call Vonage and have them adjust the line to handle data."

On a thread entitled Motorola VT2142, new Vonage Forum Member hydrod asks the following question to start the thread:

"I currently am using the VTech with the two Vonage phones that came with it," hydrod writes. "My question, Is the Motorola VT2142 compatible with the VTech, can they be hooked up together or not. When I first got Vonage I didn't think about my Fax machine, and it does need a phone line to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Offering help is our most frequent poster, Steve48.

"I assume that you're talking about the VTech IP8100. If that's correct, they should be compatible," Steve48 writes.

"One word of warning. Whether you set it up with the VT2142 first, feeding the VTech, or the VTech first, feeding the VT2142, the first in line can "hog" all the bandwidth and cause poor performance on the second in line," Steve48 adds. "This should occur only if the phone line for the first unit in line is in use. If you have plenty of bandwidth, then it shouldn't be an issue."

Vonage Stock Report

Today  on the New York Stock Exchange,  Vonage stock closed at $1.99 a share, which was a decline of 13 cents (-6.57%) from Tuesday's closing price of $2.12 a share, but then again that was 13 cents higher than the day's lowest price and that was $1.86 a share.
